Well, I’m sure you’re all dying to know how the girl I’ve been tutoring
did on her chemistry final…She fuckin aced it!!! Do NOT ask me how
that happened; she must have FINALLY taken my advice and actually
opened the book. No really, she got D’s all year long I was crossing my
fingers she wouldn’t bomb and here she got a 95.
OK, now to VF related stuff. I was surfing yesterday and found the
exact episodes of Beavis and Butthead in which the VF appeared. How’s
THAT for useless information? OK, if you ever see these episodes come
up, watch them (really now, they can’t be more painful than Sabrina!):
From Season 4, first appeared March 15, 1994, “Cow Tipping”. Nightmares
is shown here.
From Season 5, first appeared October 31, 1994 (part one of a two part
show), “Held Back”. Breakin’ Up is shown here.
Oh, Yes, the Official Webpage has a Tribute to Frank Sinatra. I haven’t
really looked at it, because I have to download a plugin for it, and
netscape bombed last time I tried to download it. There’s some fairly
recent new photos, too.

i dont know if this is my favorite quote in music of all times but here
it is
“Its better to burn out than to fade away”
I heard this in the Highlander movie but apparently it was taken in some
form from a Niel Young song of name unknown to me

>”I’m in Style” was written by Gordon a *long* time ago, before anyone
>had ever heard of Violent Femmes, which made the lyrics outrageously
>sarcastic/funny.

Is there anywhere we can view these lyrics??? Nick ()
and I have discussed this song off list before. Neither of us remembers
the exact lyrics just that they were funny and the last time either of
us heard the song performed was circa late 80’s.

>Regarding Guy Schaafs question, the guys do play “Jesus Walking on the
>Water” in concert, but not that often anymore. You may notice they
>did play it recently, and Gordon played the violin.

Yes Oh yes… He did play the violin in Charlotte NC. It was ….
delightful….

you think that’s bad? An early Lemonheads producer forced the band to
record Suzanne Vega’s “Luka”… at gunpoint.

RE: Bass Tabs..Let’s Hear This
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Pat,
I’ve written a few Violent Femmes bass tabs:
agamemnon.btab
blackgirls.btab
breakinup.btab
candlelightsong.btab
colour.btab
flamingo.btab
helikesme.btab
johnny.btab
please.btab
promise.btab
sweetmiseryblues.btab
thanksgiving.btab
iknowitstrue.txt
They’re all quite accurate. If anyone wants a copy, could they mail me
or something? I’ve sent most of these files to Wes , so they should be available from his archive whenever he updates
it…
The Femmes really should re-learn how to play “Never Tell”: that would
be the ultimate live Femmes song, imho. Anyone with a bassline for this
song should contact me!
Thanks for your time.
Visit Australia. We’re lonely.
A couple of questions, do the femmes play “See my Ships” live. I think
it would be fantastic live.
And also what does Gordon mean when he sings cold cane is my cheap
thrill. I have no idea what cold cane is, does anyone.
Frank
-Pat. Says: Yes, it does say that on the liner notes AND on the Official
homepage. I’ve always believed it to be ‘cocaine’, even if
it isn’t so cheap.
hey, gk, i love your story. i didn’t have time to check out the rest
of your stuff, but the femmes story kicked ass. granted, it had no
point and was probably a waste of my time, i enjoyed it. i even
chuckled out loud. nice work. future story idea: gk takes ginger
spice’s spot in the spice girls, and beats the crap out of all of them.
(except for scary spice, she looks good). just thought i’d share my
comments.
RE: To the Bitter End..Freak Magnet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hmm.. one summer when my brother and I were munchkins, we went up north
with our grandparents for a weekend. Our grandparents went out golfing
on i think saturday afternoon, and Andy (my brother) and I decided to go
sit our pier and fish for minnows (we were little, it was cute), but
after about an hour we got bored. We got all of our stuff together and
went up to the house and sure enough, it was locked. We were stuck
outside, so we went into the garage and found a coffee can. (note: when
we were fishing Andy was playing the kazoo, so we had one of those with
us) So we went across the street and sat on the road side and sang that
song “the first time i looked into your eyes i cried” because it was the
only real people song we knew by memory. After about ten minutes of me
singing and Andy playing his kazoo to the chorus (okay, so maybe we only
memorized a little bit of the song, but still) a police car drove by,
and they told us we couldn’t be there. Being munchkins, we thought we
were going ot get arrested and have to have our grandparents bail us out
of jail, so we ran back into the yard (coffee can in tote) and started
playing there.
So, even munchkins get busted for singing for money in public places.
I’m sooo bored, can you tell?

Also, my friend made me a copy of freak magnet (YES I WILL STILL BUY THE
CD WHEN IT COMES OUT, I HATE TAPES!!) and it is really good, like way
way good. Here is my opinion on the all of the songs:

“I’m Bad” (2:42) – I think this is the perfect opening song to the cd,
because it gets me really excited and pumped up. I listened to my tape
for the first time in study hall this past monday, and i had the volume
turned up a little. I was sitting at a lunch table and i jumped off the
bench, people were pretty amused, they almost got a tape player to figure
out what i was listening to. sorry, i babble. I’ve heard this in concert
twice now, and I really like it… it makes me do my geometry homework
faster which is a major plus.

“Freak Magnet” (2:37) – This song was also very good, and keeps you
pumped up, kept laughing out loud while i was listening to it, and my
studyhall teacher was getting a major kick out of random laughter coming
from a person sitting all by themself at a table. it’s a funny song,
yep… that’s all i can think of to say about it.

“All I Want” (4:09) – this is like THE song of the album. i love it
soooo much, it is sooooooooooo (note: for full extent of so-ness, pretend
there are 10 pages of the o’s) good. the words and musoc are perfect for
each other, and i love it.

“Rejoice and Be Happy” (2:11) – fun fun, it’s a really good song.
religious, good, i like it, mm, yea. sometimes i have a lot to say about
songs, and sometimes i can’t think of hardly anything. this is a hardly
anything case even though the song is really good.

“I Wanna See You Again” (2:43) – this song is really cute too, it’s
slower…but not slow. y’know? ooh, i made a rhyme. umm, yes, it is
good.

“I’m Nothing” (2:24) – i like this song, and everybody knows it, so i’m
going to move on. WAIT! what’s new about it? i’ve never heard the
original version… at least as far as i can remember.

“Positively 4th Street” (2:52) – this song is really good to listen to
when you get exam projects piled on a week or less before exams. very
good. fun fun, it kind of pisses me off, though, y’know? like I’m
listening to it and i find myself mumbling “God damn impotent nazi cock
n’ ballers” about my teachers, that could just be supressed rage having
nothing to do with the song though.. who knows!

“A Story (featuring Pierre Henry)” (4:58) – very very dark, it’s good
though. it’s weird because it reminded me of a davemt band song, because
they had a really dark song on their new cd too and it surprised me too.
i mean i know the femmes sing dark songs and all, but this was just like
“damn”

“Happiness Is” (4:20) – i like this song, but i don’t have much to say
about it.

“Forbidden” (2:55) – i like the words to this one, but i can’t remember
the music to it right now.

“Mosh Pit” (2:13) – funny stuff. good.

“Yes Oh Yes” (3:22) – this is a nice slow song, i liked it.

and the other songs were all good too, but im lazy so i can’t type a
little note about them.

that’s all, now i have to go help my brother’s girlfriend learn german.

ahh seaside…i sympathize with you Drew. i live in nj and im down in
seaside quite a lot. im really sorry to hear that people were giving
you a hard time. had i been down there i probably would have thrown some
quarters in your cases and sang along. i love when people bring out
their guitars on the boardwalk.
my vote for the favorite summer song would definately be 36-24-36. keep
that one. i guess if youre in the mood for a change though, id say pick
anything off of 3. 🙂

Drew, how can I commend you enough! Your faithful, undying support
and perseverance is just what we fans should strive to achieve.
Okay, I’m done being sappy.
I think 36-24-36 is a GREAT song to start off the summer with. Blister
in the Sun is a classic, but sometimes ya need a change, you know?
I got a question for everyone. I’m in a ska band with some kids from
my school, and I would love for us to cover a VF song. Any ideas on
which songs would transfer well to ska or swing? I love the whole crazy
solo section in the middle of Black Girls, but I don’t know if we could
pull that off.
Only one more week of school–Yay summer!!!

Claire

P.S. If FM comes out this fall, I promise to write a review of it for
my school newspaper, which doesn’t suck, unlike our yearbook.

My fav. Femmes summer song is “Held Her In My Arms”. But my favorite
summer songs are by the Ramones. Especially “Rockaway Beach”.

Bobby Sayers

Love kills…..

-Pat. Says: Is that a quote from the song done by Joe Strummer?

RE: Best Femmes Summer Song
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My favorite VF summer song is also “I Held Her in My Arms”, with “I’m
Free” and “Life is an Adventure” running close behind, but now that
I’ve heard Freak Magnet a bit, I may soon change my vote to “Forbidden”
as the best ever VF summer song.
-Pat.
