Chris Staley cstaley Visit the Violent Femmes message board at: http://red.cscwc.pima.edu/~cstaley/femmes/board.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ebay Video ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, folks, I want to thank you (well MOST of you) for not bidding against me on that video. I was the high bidder, and so the rest of you will benefit; it's going on the compilation. About that compilation: a few of you have stuff we would like to add. Please try to find that stuff and get in contact with either Deana or me. When I receive my video in the mail, I'm going to make a last call for submissions and list what we have. I have to tell you that not too many people have volunteered their clips, and this is sad, because I wanted to make this a listwide effort. Anyway, I don't want this to drag on forever because I know you're anxious to get your copies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Simulcast ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For those of you who missed it last night, never fear; there's another simulcast tonight. It'll be at http://www.first-avenue.com , click on Tonight and follow the links. I think the actual URL for the webcast is http://206.147.162.62/_frames/frm_tonight.htm A couple of tips: I don't think you can access except between few minutes before and a few minutes after the show. At least I couldn't. I think the show started at 8:00 Central time; it was at 9 here on the east coast. Adjust your listening time accordingly, but keep checking between 6 and 8 central time to be sure you don't miss it. Also, make sure you have the newest version of Real Audio, and have deleted every trace of the old versions. Try accessing the page a couple of hours before the show. I did, and got an error message which when I clicked on help, told me that I needed a clean install. It explained exactly what files to delete. This I did, and downloaded the RA G2 or something or other. And then of course I tested it to be sure it was in proper working order. It's the beta version, which will expire in 4 months, but I'll worry about that then. Anyway, I had all this done with a half hour to spare and THEN my connection crashed (damn epix) and it took me a half hour to get back online; JUST in time to hear the first song. I mean I cut it close! Also, don't be surprised if when you try to access the site you get a message saying "outdated link" or something along those lines. I think that's what it says when they're not simulcasting. Now, a question. I only got the first half hour of the show. Is this all they simulcast? Is that why the band took a break after a half hour, to disconnect the simulcast equipment? I am hoping that this was the case, and not that my computer screwed up somewhere. OK, highlights of the half hour of the show I was able to hear: They played Hallowed Ground! I've been thinking lately that it'd be great to hear them do this live, because I don't think I have before. Thanks, guys. They always seem to start playing a song just at the time I begin to wish to hear it live. Waiting for the Bus down and bluesy, with Brian on the Shakuhachi. He's really getting good on that thing! Black Girls with Gone Daddy Gone and some children's (?) song I'm sure I heard before but can't remember what it is, stuck in the middle and sung beautifully by Guy. Scott and I were listening and saying, "that's not Gordon! Who is it?" Positively 4th Street, which I wish they had played at the Folk Festivals. Not too different from the FM version. Thanks to First Avenue for broadcasting at least a part of this show! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Simulcast! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OH MY GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWD!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE DIED AND GONE TO INTERNET HEAVEN!!! And GUY HOFFMAN IS SINGING THE MOST INCREDIBLE VERSION OF GONE DADDY GONE I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAHHHHHH!!!! Positively 4th Street!!!!!! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rock On You FABULOUS FEMMES!!!!!! Deana ddearry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dance Intro ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Because I am now in college and have more time to waste then ever before I have decided that I would put together a list of all the intros for "Dance MF Dance" that Brian gives at the concerts. So, if you can remember any from the shows you have been to, please send them to: dkubiak Please also include the date and location of the show. When I finish the compilation I am willing to send it to anyone who wants it, just ask! 1djek3 dkubiak -Pat. Says: I'm going to try to find the time to peruse through back issues and send along everything I find. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gordon's "Little Chocolate Helper" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, "Happiness Is" makes Kathryn feel like she's got her period, huh? Well, I think that actually adds dimension to the song! Someone suggested Gordon was reminiscing on the munchies when writing it, but maybe he was just PMS'ing and had a chocolate craving! That would certainly explain why those chocolate turtles are so very important to his happiness and why he becomes unhappy and whiny when they're gone. Of course, chocolate turtles are good food on any day of the month, and chocolate turtle cheesecake from a certain little diner in Milwaukee? Oh God! Don't even get me started! amberlace ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sea Cows on Crack! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >Have any of you made up your own lyrics for Femmes songs? Thanks for reminding me! This was one of the things I was thinking of asking over the summer when I spent countless hours cleaning horse stalls with nary a computer in sight. Way back in the day, my friends and I would sing "Did you do too many drugs?/ I did too many drugs./ *There's no such thing as too many drugs, it's true!*/ Baby." This was the same group of friends who introduced me to the Femmes, so I could tell about my first time hearing a femmes song, but I'll save that for another day. Then there was the time I was down in Florida getting my SCUBA certification and swimming with manatees. My instructor told us about how the poor manatees had been getting butchered by boat propellers and so now there were special "manatee lanes" where you couldn't have powerboats, and when boating through densly manatee populated areas you always had to go very slowly. Suddenly I broke into "He was smart./ He was wise./ He profoundly philosophized empathy for his manatee!" I think it was a combination of too much sun and the motion sickness I was suffering from, although manatees really are cool--I even got to kiss one I was swimming alongside! Hmmm...I know there's more but apparently I can't think unless I'm in a barn. Oh well. There were other things I thought of too discuss but I'll save those for the next time conversation lags. ***amber amberlace P.S. Oh yeah. Another one is "Standing on the corner/ *Waiting for Godot*!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Deprivation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ << Why must they play in Illinois 5000 times a year, when we suffer down below the Mason Dixon line? >> I solved this problem. I used to live in Baton Rouge. I moved up to Chicago, and I've seen well over 20 Violent Femmes concerts in almost two years. john #3 DidacticCP ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
