THE MOST FAMOUS UNKNOWN BAND IN THE WORLD

Twelve years ago, the VIOLENT FEMMES were playing punkabilly-tainted, psychotic- acoustic music on East Side street corners for pocket change. Today, touring with THE GRATEFUL DEAD and LOLLAPALOOZA legitimizes their lopsided view of the world, and they are more  threatening than ever.

So there's this trio called VIOLENT FEMMES. The singer, Gordon Gano has a whiny singing voice that transfers the agony of his lyrics almost too well. Then there's Victor de Lorenzo, who used to play a wash basin over a snare drum and a tall bass player called Brian Ritchie. There's a history of atypical behaviour in this band; unfortunately I've only heard about Gordon's. (It's all hearsay, so don't take it too seriously) . Gordon sometimes wore a bathrobe to highschool and he carried around an acoustic guitar, which he played in the hallways of Rufus King High School between classes. He was even suspended from King and excommunicated from the National Honor Society after his band, VIOLENT FEMMES, played "Gimme The Car" (A ghastly adolescent fantasy about back- seat sex) at a school assembly. That was their first gig. Obscurity hasn't dwindled.

Just back from a four- week European tour their 1991 tour through the states they did a lot of sold out shows in front of 25,000 and more fans- many of them young enough to be Victor de Lorenzo's children (his suggestion). Most times all their fans erupted into a manic frenzy. The only thing in the world that mattered was that the VIOLENT FEMMES keep playing. Hope you'll feel the same way too!
