This way you could run the wants longer but not as often. Less work for you :o) Carrie -Pat. Says: Now THERE's a possible solution. In fact I like it so much I've instituted it, effective immediately. Buy/Sell/Trade will henceforth appear only in Monday issues. So PsychoEvil and Valerie.M.Pullin, I hope you don't mind waiting till Monday for your recent ads to appear. Today's issue is already very long, and one more day of ads might have turned this into the first ever THREE parter! Und DAS, ich mochte lieber nicht sehen! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Boca Raton Show ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK - forget who's the better drummer - how about who's the ruder drummer? I vote for Guy Hoffman. Anyway, went to the Boca show and suffered through Goldfinger - who have neither the vaguest idea of ska nor the slightest ability to pull it off. Hey! For all you Ska lovers! They yell as they play some bad punk. Losing the audience they yell 'On your feet!' and play Tumbthumper - some one else's hit. They namecheck a few influences (They should not even be allowed to SAY Bad Religion) wear training bras on their heads and bitch about it being '80's night, cause if this was our show....' Hm. And if you had a hammer I'm sure you'd hammer your wasted little brains out. So bascially, I didn't likeGoldfinger. I must disclose that having left the area I have not been to FAU since my own misspent youth when I went there with friends who wanted to score. Judging by the deals on the way in - this is still a major pasttime. Smoke set off the fire alarms and we were evicted. Many people were leaving but after having done the penance of Goldfinger I felt that a just universe would not deny me the femmes. So I wandered busward, where I encountered Guy. I asked Guy if the show was def off, or if we might be on after all. Guy stared at me blankly. So I asked again. No response again. Would it have killed the guy to say "Yes/No/I dunno"? ? ? I think not. So some pass wearing person comes up to introduce Guy to his good friend, roadied for whoever - I didn't listen, and I wandered off. Guy had found his vocal chords but was still apparently having trouble with the little people. He turned his back on my group and walked off with his new pals. Look, if you don't want to talk to someone, great - try saying "I'm a dick, bug off" oh wait! That was communicated non verbally! How silly of me not to notice the FIRST time. I gave him a bit of credit for humanity. While I've never been impressed with Guy's drumming, I've stayed out of the fray. Please place me down for one anti-Guy vote. So Gordon is on the bus and Brian is wandering. Gordon's reading a book, then at nine he draws the curtains and watches TV (Hm, Monday at nine- Buffy?) Since they don't look like they're leaving, neither do I. Eventually the show goes on and we (the remaining) are readmitted. I end up in worse seats than I had - but so what? Until a group comes by and inform me that they have tickets to my seat. no kidding. so we move on and kick the squatters out of our better seats. Spread the love, people. The show was pretty good - longer than I expected after the eve's events. Prolly my last FAU show tho - the crowd was not there for the music - they were there to do the big meet and greet. No vibe at all. I'm sure someone else did the set list - so I'll leave it off. In short, if you left when the fire trucks came, you missed out. I'm glad I decided to be stubborn. Liz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Musical Tastes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I didn't want to compare the two groups, but just note some people may take a liking to the group because of the uniqueness. (is that a word?) The group just caught my ear when I saw them on T.V. Anyways, I was real disapointed with the response that you got when you talked about Buffalo Tom. Everyone has their own opinion, and we shouldn't get flame or hate mail just because we express it. Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Opening Bands ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ i saw a show way back when '89 i think. in montreal actually at the university de montreal and the pogues opened for the femmes. they put on a great show a full set i think... did the pogues do the whole tour does anybody know??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Opening Bands ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Opening Bands I remember the first time I saw the femmes as well was when the opened for the B-52's back in 1992 I believe at Merriweater Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. They were great. Then I saw them again at a Earth Day Concert at Merriweather where they really caught my attention. Since then, I have seen Jimmy's Chicken Shack open for them, which I didn't care for even though they have been getting more recognition. I believe that was at the new years eve concert two years ago. When they played at Hammerjacks in 1994 in think Jimmy's chicken shack opened for them too. If anybody else went to that concert, can you correct me if I'm wrong. I really want to know for sure who opened for them there. Also I saw them at Georgetown last spring, and I don't remember if there was an opening band. And of course their famous performance at the 1994 HFStival. What a show!!!! I guess then they had 5 opening bands right? ok maybe not. Is Goldfinger just a one time thing or are they going to do more shows together. Bobby V. Waiting and Praying for them to come to DC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Opening Bands..VF Influences ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >Just curious what bands have opened for the Femmes in the past.... Out of, I don't know how many, here are the ones that have stood out for me. Indigo Girls, Luka Bloom, The Pogues, The Feelies, Phil Cody, (I think maybe I witnessed the other live fluke for them, Pat.. they were decent live except the first few songs I heard-I think the sound system was to blame at the Glass House in Pomona-good enough to check out their CD, which I REALLY like. They are a cross between Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Big Head Todd & the Monsters.) Of the bands that the Femmes have opened up for: The B-52's A fun band that I've seen Gordon play with:Carmaig De Forest/Death Groove Love Party (Frisco & La La areas) >What bands and musicians do members of the Violent Femmes list as major >influences on their music? I believe Gordon listens to classical music and admires Neil Young. Brian claims Sun Ra for one-I saw SR live before he died & I just got a CD which shows a strong relation, especially in those long improvisational instrumentals like in Black Girls. On one of Brian's solo albums there is a song about him/them. A Biento maintenant! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Fake Fans ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ maybe i live in an odd community, but it is not at all rare for me to meet a femmes fan. most of my friends love the femmes. true, most of them only have add it up and debacle (all of us have a scratchy old copy of the same beat up old tape), but they are more than BITS only fans. i personally have hallowed ground, why do birds sing, and violent femmes as well, and intend to get all of the rest when i have the money. but as i was saying when i started to make my original point... most of the bands i listen to are considered much more obscure than the femmes, at least where i live. i mean, i know of maybe two other ppl in my town who listen to the pixies, or the sugarcubes, or the smiths, or the revolting cocks. most ppl know ministry, so they may recognize revolting cocks' music as familiar (being that they're basically the same band), but no one knows my music. personally i like the fact that at least one of the bands i love are known to some. and the nice thing is, not everyone likes them. and definately not the ppl i dont want to be associated with. if i were to choose all the ppl at my school who i thought were "cool" or interesting ppl, who i would like to be friends with, most of them would be femmes fans, and i doubt more than a handful of the ppl i didnt pick would be (save for some preps thinking BITS "sounds cool"). and you must admit it is nice when femmes concerts sell enough tickets that they keep coming back. some of my favorite bands will probably not come back to columbus for a long time, simply bacause they dont draw a big enough crowd, but the femmes concerts sell out, or nearly do. that is the only reason i have seen them twice already, and my sister has seen them countless times more than i have. in ceramics class, my teacher has the same taste in music as i do, and he lets me play whatever i want as long as it is somewhat appropriate for school. the femmes are almost the only one of my bands that the other kids in my class will put up with. you try to get a bunch of annoying high schoolers to listen to the smiths. ok....this is getting much longer than i originally intended, so ummm....goodbye now. Juliana Boiarski ;) "'Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe. All mimsy were to borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe. 'Beware the Jabberwock, my son. The jaws that bite. The claws that catch. Beware the jubjub bird, and shun the frumious bandersnatch.'" -"Jabberwocky" Lewis Carroll ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Fake Fans ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <> Well SMART person, if the band has few fans than there is no demand therefore no increase in price!! Swallow that supply and demand. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First Song ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <> Actually that IS like most. Either the first album or add it up. Take a poll I think you'll find that I'm right. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: VF Quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >And in the immortal words of Gordon Gano: >*The Violent Femmes...they bring all their equipment on the bus...AND YOU >CAN'T FUCK WITH THE VIOLENT FEMMES----YOU CANNOT FUCK WITH THIS BAND!* > IS THIS SAID BY GORDON???? I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AN ANNOUNCER. . . -Pat. Says: Nope, not Gordon. Hubby and I have been having a long running argument over who actually does say this. Anyone know? Definately NOT Gordon. I think that by the sound of that Midwest accent, I'd guess it's Brian but it sounds a little high pitched. Maybe its got some engineering interference or maybe its so old that its from before Brian's voice changed. :)) -Cheryl ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: VF Quote ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In a message dated 11/7/97 5:46:49 PM, you wrote: <> hate to disappoint but Gordon did not say that, it was a roadie or something. Listen to Gordons voice- much different. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: Assumed Names ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In regards to assumed names/Milwaukee shows, I live about an hour away from Milwaukee, in West Bend, and we have a really cool bar here in town called the Casa Rebeccah. Late last year, Guy and Brian did a show (I believe Sigmund was with them as well) there, in this tiny bar in the middle of no-where, and yes, they went under assumed names. I missed the show personally, but a lot of my friends lucked out simply because they spend so much time there. And about two weeks ago, I heard that Sigmund played there again, doing some really bizarre Mexican folk music. Go figure, eh. You just gotta love that guy... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ok I'm sick you idiots talking about fake fans. You people need to grow up. I'm sick of getting on the internet and hearing people talking about fake fans and bands being sellotus. There is sterotype these days that to be a true fan has to know every detail about the band. I also noticed another thing most of you that complain about Fake Fans and Sellouts are little high school kids. You all act like you have this new toy that you won't share with anyone else. If someone gets this toy you don't want to play with yours or if you like your toy you claim they don't know how to play with it. You know I did this in preschool you people still do it with your bands. The funny thing about all of this is the band we're talking about. It's the FEMMES!!!!! They don't have a huge fan base. I'm from Milwauke. We have the largest base of Femmes fans. But none of us are pissed because the rest of the nation found out about the Femmes. We're happy that the local boys are able to make it big. The whole point is if you like a band as much you claim you do don't worry about what other people think or why they like the band. If your a "TRUE FAN" you will love that band regardless their popular or not. Greg Pepper Selur Namtrac -Pat. Thanx. -Brian Kelly -Pat. Says: I'll let you know as soon as I find anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
