Violent Femmes Celebrate 20 Years

Expanded edition of band’s debut record to be released in June

Twenty years after the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut
album, Rhino Records will re-release the LP in a double-disc format,
with demo versions and a live record added. The demo versions of Violent Femmes songs such as “Blister in the Sun” are strikingly similar to the album cuts and reveal a band that did its homework before recording.”We planned things out as much as we could because our resources were extremely tight and limited,” says frontman Gordon Gano. “So we felt like we had to go in and execute what we had planned rather than experimenting with things in the studio.”

As the Wisconsin trio sifted through its back pages, Gano was caught
off-guard by some songs on the live disc, like “In Style” and “How Do
You Say Goodbye.” “There were a couple songs I hadn’t thought about in a long, long time because we never recorded them,” he says. “I laughed outloud. I was a little bit surprised at how much energy and spontaneity there is to the tracks.”

That spontaneity is due in part to the Violent Femmes unique way of
preparing for shows. “We’ve never had a set list,” says Gano. “When we
walk on stage we usually decide the first song we’re going to play and that allows for a lot of flexibility and responding with the audience and doing different kinds of things, because we’re not locked into what the next song is going to be and the one after that. We’re the only group I’m aware of that does this. That’s something that has always surprised me. Why are all these other rock bands doing something so un-rock & roll as having set lists?”

The expanded edition of Violent Femmes hits stores June 18th. The track listing is as follows:

RE: Reissue

I actually read about the re-release of VF: VF in a newspaper in my
native Iceland. According to the bit the album is due in stores June 18th.

On another topic, I recently stumbled on a VF video release of 1984. I
haven’t looked at it closely yet and the name of it has slipped me for
the moment but I must say that it is marvelously tacky. Is this some kind of rarity? There are about 10 or 12 songs on it, the cream of the first two albums.

RE:Tour Rumor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not that I don’t enjoy side projects of Gordon, Brian, Guy, or Victor- but there is nothing like a live Femmes show . . .
I hope the rumor of the Femmes touring this summer is true. It has been far too long since I’ve seen them, the last time was here in Boston at the Avalon- that was years ago with Possum Dixon opening. Also I haven’t heard anything recently about Gordon Gano’s solo album “Hitting the Ground” Has anyone heard any advance copies- I think its supposed to be released around May or June.
I also ordered the “What do we Have to Do” from cdbaby. It is a fun little album, definitely growing on me more and more with each listen. It doesn’t matter that I don’t know any of the artists doing the covers, its just nice to know that although the Femmes may not have great commercial recognition, that they have the respect and admiration of fellow musicians who have been influenced by the Femmes’.
So anyone interested in setting up a CD-R tree? . . . I don’t know how these things work but I think it would be a great way to share hard to get Femmes material.
