The Quote Of The Day:
It seems that no matter how much I drink

Private Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remember the post last week about the Canes show in San Diego? Well,
it has come to my attention that this is one of those Marlboro shows,
and so is a private gig. Don’t try to get tickets for it.
Denver
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, my road trip to Denver (for the LoDo — Lower Downtown —
Festival) was great.
A 10-hour drive always gets me goofy, so forgive me when say I
learned “Hallowed Ground” is best when sung in an Elmer Fudd voice.
They Might Be Giants’ John Flansburg was signing autographs after
their set on Friday. I hadn’t picked up “Factory Showroom” yet, so it
was perfect. Even better when I opened it up and there was a large
white oval on the back of the CD mount, perfect for signing.
The Femmes got a late start Saturday, so they closed down quickly at
the end, without a chance for an encore. They were good-natured about
having the beach balls from the crowd bouncing up onto the stage a
couple times. (Has anyone else noticed that the beach balls only come
out when a TV crew is nearby?) But I, too, have been at a concert
(Reno Livestock Events Center 1994) that they walked off the stage
after being hit with objects.
I don’t remember the set list, but they played a lot from the first
album … and I heard (for the first time) “Don’t Talk About My
Music” … they played DMFD without a creative intro … and they
also played the Colorado State Song. (At least I guess that’s what it
was.)
Speaking (above) about getting hit with objects, it strikes me (ha,
ha) that I’ve been to dozens of concerts and never seen any other act
stop, or even threaten to stop, a show for that reason … even after
being hit with objects — Nine Inch Nails, Beck and others. But I’ve
also noticed that it happens to the Femmes more often than it does to
other bands. The crowd Saturday was much more “drunk frat boy” than I
hoped … and I realize that the Femmes’ audience has a larger
element of that than does that of, say … geek-rockers They Might Be
Giants.
One guy, in particular, was yelling back at the sound-check guys,
beer spilling out of his gesturing grip, “Fuck you! We want the
Femmes!”
I figure that every dollar one of these morons spends on a Femmes
album or concert helps out the band, so I have mixed feelings about
wanting to commit genocide.
Anyway … the trip was great, the concert was good … and I can’t
wait to see them again!

Yes no one will forget the fateful Edge Fest in Fort Wayne, IN. Not
only did the boys have to play with the likes of Matchbox 20 and
Dishwalla, they had to endure the white trash, ignorance-fed barrage of
trash from the crowd. In a related story Fort Wayne beat out Gary
that year for the coveted “Armpit of Indiana” Award.

<< I feel no one deserves to be hit with anything while playing a
concert, nor should they dodge things being thrown on stage!
just my 2 cents. >>
I once heard Brian tell an audience that if they threw things on stage,
they were going to walk off. He said, “We already have your money, so
if you throw things, we’ll leave.” He told my husband after the show
that if those kids didn’t know better, they needed someone to tell them
so.
I think my son Dan is playing with the Horns of Dilemma again on 7/31
in Cape Cod.

RE: Does Gordon Play Violin On Stage?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Very much so. Their 95? tour in late summer made it’s way to Claremont
Colleges. A sold out house of most “too young to appreciate” saw
Gordon playing the fiddle for Jesus Walking on the Water. They were
also priviledged to witness the accompaniment of Gordon’s brother
playing guitar alongside. Off to the side of the stage were the Gano
parents. Proud, proud parents they were as they watched their son’s
showcase their talents, while they traveled along for this portion of
the west coast leg of the tour.
Via “pull myself up from my bootstrap tactics” I earned myself a
backstage pass due to a generous local sub promoter who paid me back
for helping to load in the opening act, for running numerous food runs
for his staff, and for basically just not going away. It’s tough to
track down a Femme’s gig anywhere, and I had a manic obsession to get
in.
If you have been a Femmes listener for as long as I have, you also
would have found it kind of surreal to hear Gordon play such anthems
as “Add It Up” and “Gimme the Car” and “Out the Window” in front of his
mother and father. As the songs played through I would occasionally
glance over (surreal, surreal, surreal!) to see his parents expressions.
I was amazed. These were gracious, smiling, and proud parents who
seemed to not just uphold familial creative license, but to allow for
the grace needed to see their offspring create, express, and make good
money.
Truthfully, I have to believe that, at some point, Mrs. Gano has had to
have had the following exchange with her son –
“Gordon, isn’t there any other words you could have used in “Add It Up”
son? I mean, if you had just stuck to “Kiss” I could understand, but
honey, I know you young boys masturbated, and its all part of growing
up, but couldn’t you have just stuck with getting just one ‘kiss.’?
“I love you son.”
“Oh, and Gordon, your father and I would always let you borrow the car.
Just ask.”
“Oh, and another thing son, we always have things in the house for
those blisters. Just ask. I love you son. We are proud of you boys.”
Why couldn’t all of us had such understanding in our lives? Just
another case for the beauty of family values. Let’s all just Praise
the Lord.
To Be Continued….
RE: Gordon the Violin Player
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the person who asked if Gordon ever played the violin on stage:
YES. I saw him play the electric violin for the song Machine on the
New Times tour. For that song Brian played the midi-xylaphones, but
it was programed for that wacky bass sound thats on the recording.

RE: Louise Attaque
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was reading something, somewhere about Louise Attaque, ( I think it
was on the official site ) and they were saying that the album wasn’t
available in america. In Quebec it’s availlable!!!
So if you want to order it Go ahead. It’s a brilliant album produced
by Gordon. I know that the band has already recorded their second
opus, I hope that Gordon did something on it, but seeing what the
femmes did lately I suppose that he didn’t have time.
P.S. I don’t know if we can put it in the news letter but i’ve got a
number from a store in Quebec from which we can order the album and i
know for sure that they do mail-orders for a little fee.
