New Year’s Greetings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To all of you who celebrate tonight as New Year’s Eve, have a happy and
safe night of debauchery. This will be sent out in the evening, and if
any of you are going to tonight’s show in Chicago, you probably won’t
be reading this till tomorrow. Please let us all know how the show went.
I can’t think of a single thing I’d rather do on New Year’s than see
the VF. Damn. Too far away..hubby works tomorrow.
RE: Mangling the Name
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i had forgotten about this – which happens pretty often – until last
night, when it happened once again. my license plate is “V FEMS”.
an acquaintance of mine noticed the tag for the first time, and,
assuming that the V was a roman numeral 5, asked “what does
‘five femmes’ mean?”

and since i’m a vegetarian, people also frequently think that the
V stands for “vegetarian,” and that my vanity tag is some sort of
statement on vegetarian feminism (or feminist vegetarianism).

highly amusing.

RE: South Park
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The lyrics that Kyle was singing in the Christmas special (second verse
same as the first) are not just from the Violent Femmes. When I used to
go to summer camp, we’d sing the same song over and over, just adding the
line “Second verse, same as the first. A little bit louder and a little
bit worse!”. We’d keep getting louder and louder…
FLASHBACKS!!! AHHHH!!!
RE: South Park
my parents run an arts camp during the summer, and when i was really
little they used to do “performing arts week” which was an overnight
camp, and everyone sang the usual camp songs. there was one called
“little red wagon” and after every verse you would say “second (or third,
etc.) verse, same as the first. a little bit louder and a little bit
worse.” and then you would preceed to sing it louder and ummm…well…
worse. ok…just thought i would add another place that line may have
come from.
Juliana
“you can’t ride in my little red wagon. front seat’s broken and the
axel’s draggin’. chug, baby. chug, baby. chug, chug, chug. Second verse.
same as the first. a little bit louder, and a little bit worse…..”
><I can hear music, sweet sweet music.>>
>
>Just wondering, I have never heard them sing that background vocal
>live. Has anyone?
>
hey, somebody besides me noticed this!! 🙂
actually, they *used* to sing the “i can hear music, sweet sweet music”
part live — when victor was the drummer. i was *pretty* sure i
remembered them singing that counterpoint live, but had no proof, until
i was re-organising my videos, and came across an old (and really,
really poor quality) tape i made of their appearance on the dennis
miller show in (i think) early 1992; on it you can clearly hear, and see,
that victor sings the “i can hear music” part. they haven’t done it live
since guy joined, and that really puzzles me — he sings on other songs,
so why not that one?
bec
-Pat. Says: If Guy won’t do it, maybe they should see if someone else
will. Willie, perhaps.
Loudon Wainwright III (Was RE: I Held Her In My Arms)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
> I want to think it was Louden Wainright III,

Does anybody know if this guy has actually opened for the Femmes?
Louden rocks! When I first heard him I even thought he sounded a bit
like a young Gordon. (Please don’t attack me for that. Really. Please.)

Promise in Bad Movie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was watching some stupid movie (i think it was called sunset heat,
Dennis Hopper was in it) But at one point it showed a guy alone in his
house playing guitar and singing. To my amazement he was singing
“Promise”!! Where the hell did that come from. Just thought I’d share
that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chicago Hope
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can’t believe I’d forgotten about this for so long, but these
are the shoddy details. This summer I was watching Chicago Hope one
evening. Two brothers or friends took a convenience store by force with
many hostages inside. One of the brothers was the sane one fighting for
the purpose of their revolution, the other was the anti-society,
shoot-’em-up brother. The wacko brother turned on the radio and began
singing along very dirge-like to the song being piped in. It was
“Nothing Worth Living For.” I thoroughly enjoyed it. Evidently someone
on the production staff is a VF fan.
Have fun,
Jason
-Pat. Says: This was mentioned on the list last summer, but it never
hurts to remind people to look for this show in repeats.
Hell, Sabrina’s been on three times already, and we’re bound
to see it again since it rated so highly. I think I’ll
pass from now on tho.
Birth Announcement
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to announce the birth of a bouncing baby Didgeridoo.

It weighs in at 141cm end to end and has an 8.5cm opening at the trumpet
end, it also features hand painted fish totems. It came to me (from me
and Chanukkah Harry) late last week. I waited three (3) weeks+ for it
to come to me from Australia.

I am so so so happy. I have got the basic drone most of the time. I
have a long way to go, I think, before circular breathing and so forth.

I am overjoyed. Maybe a year from now I will place a small sample or
link to one in a message to this mailing list. I am also overjoyed that
the Femmes are continuing to tour. Not sure why though? Happy
Gregorian New Year!

Jesse
