Red is all in my head
Some things are left better unsaid
Is that why you don’t try to acknowledge or reply?

RE: Other Bands
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone,
Besides VF, my favorite bands are: Morphine, The Cure, Smashing
Pumpkins, Lincoln, TMBG, Weezer, Sonia Dada, Alice In Chains, Radiohead,
Better than Ezra, Rusted Root, Maggie, Pierce and Ej, Moxy Fruvous and
my dearest of the dear, Pearl Jam. I also love my daughter’s boyfriend’s
band, Overlord.
Adam is right, everyone should check out Maggie, Pierce and Ej.
They have such a great sound. Someone mentioned Lincoln before. Does
anyone know if they are still together? The last two times I saw TMBG,
they had Lincoln’s bass and guitar players with them. I have been
searching the Village Voice for some Lincoln shows, but nothing for a
while.
BTW, I think Gordon is pretty intellectual. Every time I’ve spoken
with him, he has had some pretty good things to say.
Band Response…Black Girls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
first of all I have to say THANK YOU!!! to all the people who responded
to my question about favorite bands, and there was a lot of you. It is
pretty interesting to see all the differences and at the same time all
the similarities. Second of all I like Mustard Plug too, and I’m from
NY. And last of all, about Black Girls….WHO CARES. It’s an awsome song
so lets leave it at that.

Thanks again

No Social Commentary??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>I just don’t
>think Gordon has the right kind of intelligence for clever social
>commentary.
I was just wondering if Jeff has ever hear the following songs by the
Femmes: Dahmer is Dead, Dating Days, World We’re Living In, Lies, Lack
of Knowledge, Old Mother Reagan, No Killing, I’m Nothing, Mirror Mirror
(debatable on whether it fits in this list)…… I am sure there are
other clever social commentaries by the Femmes that I just forgot, but
don’t these fit the bill?
Re: Never Tell
>I was wondering if anyone can tell me what “Never Tell” is about.
Good question… Never Tell is definitely the absolute best Femmes song
in my book. From what I’ve figured out: You are right about one thing,
the narrator/singer is most certainly deceased. He was sent much more
then six feet under, though, speaking of the heart of Hell and all,
which is probably why he’s so ticked. The person he’s come back to
speak to is most certainly alive, and female (‘Hey sister’… ‘Listen
to me baby’, etc.). While alive, he had trusted her with a secret,
which she betrayed to the ‘authorities’ or whomever is on the side of
the right. The narrator is a rebellious person, who patronizes any
authority. (The whole beginning: “Oh please pardon me Mister/ Father”
Police/Religion.) He did something wrong, she found out, he warned her
not to tell (“I will find you out/ I will cut you up”), she told
anyway, he was killed either in attempting escape or execution or some
such thing, he was strong enough to survive the Inferno (“I stood right
up in the heart of Hell”) and leave somehow, if only temporarily, and
he came back to make good on his promise (“You ain’t never going to
tell on someone”). He now has her trapped and is taunting her,
cynically and mockingly.
The ‘some people stand like trees’ line seems like it could possibly be
a reference to Dante, but I highly doubt it because it would be used in
the wrong context (he’s speaking to a living person about the standards
of living people) and, as I’ve said before, Gordon doesn’t use
allusions in his songs.
Sink down, sink down, sink down. Down, down, to the bottom of the
River sink down, sink, sink down down,
Down, down to the bottom of the river sink down…
Re: Never Tell
I always though Never Tell was about a disturbed child who drowns his
sister because she was a tattle tale. DISCLAIMER: If I’m wrong, it’s
because i can’t concentrate on lyrics when there’s such great
instrumentalism going on in the background.
He likes American Music
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My friend Nick is an exchange student here at Rice University by way of
Cambridge. When I got to know him this year, we naturally started
talking about music and found our tastes to be pretty similar. Mostly
we wander around singing old Clash songs (which confuses the average
american college student who’s maybe, maybe heard Rock the Casbah).
Anyhow, here’s where the femmes come in. Nick and I exchange the cd’s
we think best represent the music of our respective countries. He gave
me the Stone Roses and Massive Attack. What could i trade Nick to best
represent my taste for American music?

I gave him Hallowed Ground. Of course. Folk, gospel, blues, punk…
all within the framework of u.s. rock n’ roll. Perfect, haunting,
powerful, diverse. I’ll admit it’s not their most accessible album, but
by far, their farthest reaching.

Nick thinks it’s pretty odd. But he likes it.

Hello there!
i was wondering if that video is still comming out or not? And also,
what was that web page where you can order Freak Magnet?

-Pat. Says: Well, the craziness of the holidays has put both Deana and
me in our individual little tailspins. I have to send her
some more stuff, then maybe we can get a little more. I did
say I couldn’t guarantee Xmas delivery, but it won’t be
much after that, I don’t think. I think the web page is
http://www.slcd.com If I’m wrong, someone who has bought
FM will be sure to steer you in the right direction.

Freak Magnet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ok, i just received my copy of Freak Magnet and first of all Pat, i’m
sorry, i couldn’t wait any longer. I promise i’ll buy the released one
when it finally comes out. anyway, wanted to give my two thumbs up on
the CD. I’ve heard Bad, Rejoice and Be Happy, and Freak Magnet in
concert, but the whole album i was impressed with. Really like the
third song, All I Want, just might be my favorite one on the album,
haven’t decided yet, or heard the album enough. The remake of I wanna
see you Again is really good too. Anyway, overall i was really
impressed, now i just have to go see another concert, this time being
able to sing the songs they play from Freak Magnet. well, back to my
paper….seven days until I graduate.
