Apologies and Excuses
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not much of a letter today folks. It’s short, but there are some great
submissions, as you will see. Sorry it’s a day late; Combination of
a wicked cold and the post holiday crash I always go through. Expect
the same around Xmas/Chanukkah.
The Violent Femmes for the first time in Portugal
Coimbra is a 150.000 inhabitants city in the center of Portugal, about
40 Kms from the Atlantic coast.
Coimbra is the Portuguese’s Oxford. We have a 700 year old University,
one of the oldest in Europe. There’s almost 30.000 university students.
Every year in the beginning and at the end of the shool year the
students’ academy promotes large parades and festivals. It usually lasts
a week each. A serenade at minight in the Old Church opens the festival.
During the daytime there are lots of cultural activities and sports.
Plus the parade that completely stops the city. At night there are rock
concerts. This year we had the previlege to have the Femmes in the menu.
I couldnt miss them! The week before the concert i heard tickets were
being sold in Lisbon. But why not here? Tickets were only sold in
Coimbra (and with a special discount for students) on the day of the
concert. The organization sold 15.000 tickets for a 4000 capacity
pavillion. This is why i had to mosh my way to the tickets.
There were 3 bands that night. The first were “Hornet”, they used to be
called “Vicius Curruptus”. Then “Da Weasel” played, they are a
Portuguese rap band. Quite good, in fact; though not in my preferences.
Then came the one and only….. “Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to
this stage…. for the first time in Portugal….. THE VIOLENT
FEMMES!!!” I should add…… the guy spoke Portuguese 😉
The Femmes started playing and suddenly everything became too violent. I
had to get out after the first hour of the concert. I think Im getting
old. Once you’re 21…. i dono…. ur older.
Well, then i came back and just lived the moment. I had lost the group
that had joined me in the beginning but who the hell cares when you have
the Femmes playing just for you (did i forget to mention that i was
alone? – i bought 15.000 tickets). The Femmes played all the songs i
knew and didnt know. They played for 2 hours and 30 minutes. I think
they were pretty surprised, they werent expecting everyone knew the
lyrics – even i was surprised!. They couldn’t speak Portuguese
and the best i hear was Brian saying “obrigado”. Gordon said he once
started to learn Portuguese, he even bought the tapes. But then came a
beautiful girl that started kissing and hugging him so he didn’t learn
Portuguese. Everyone laughed out loud.
Then it was music, music, music.
And in the end Gordon said “thank you thank you thank you thank you thank
you thank you very much” I think they enjoyed it too.
Ta ta
I dont remember much more to say right now and i hope this doesnt suck.
RE: GPB Soundtrack
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone…
Personally, I don’t think the GPB soundtrack is worth it. I only bought
it for the purpose of owning “Blister 2000”, which, by the way, I love.
It might not be anything compared to the original but it is better than
the new version of “Blister” that is on the album.
You should definitely buy the soundtrack if you like the Femmes and like
“blister in the sun”. I think the horns did it for me. And no, I do not
like ska one bit!

Psycho Lightning Nemic Boy

ps. yes, TMBG kick ass!

A Story
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve been too shy to write to this page for the duration of my
subcription,and don’t even know if this is the right way to do it. . .?
But I’ve seen the Femmes four times, and the first time, I didn’t really
know anything about them, then saw them and fell in love. I got to meet
them, and Guy was giving my best friend a back massage, while I was joking
with Gordon. I made him laugh 3 times hehehehe! Brian was just sort of
there. I’m in MA, and saw their last concert 🙁 at UMass Dartmouth; I was
right in front of Gordon, and have some great pictures – he kept looking
at me and would occasionally smile, oh, he’s so cute – he came right to
the edge of the stage and I snapped a picture of him while he looked at
the camera and smiled; unfortunately, I went to print it and it came out
blurry (damn slow shutter speed!)
Umm, so yeah. Have a good thanksgiving all Americans!
