The Boca Raton Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This response to the Boca Raton, Florida show may be quite opinionated.
So if any of you do not like opinions, stop reading here.
The Violent Femmes put on a pretty good show in Boca Raton. They
started the set off with Didgeridoo Blues and ended with Add It Up.
They played alot of songs from their first album. I was really
impressed with Gone Daddy Gone. The only complaint I had with the group
was they did not play any songs from New Times.
Now for the opinion. The Femmes had Goldfinger open for them. I won’t
comment on whether or not I like Goldfinger’s music. But why the Femmes
or FAU let Goldfinger play there, I have no idea. The venue was a small
auditoriam. Goldfinger was encouraging everyone to mosh and crowd surf
and there just wasn’t any room. I had front row seats, but lost them
after a fire alarm went off. We still were up front, but so were the
left over moshing idiot Goldfinger fans. The Femmes stopped the show a
couple times because of moshing and people throwing things at Gordon. I
really do not know why people go to a show just to throw things. At the
end of the show, a fight broke out in front of Gordon and Brian.
Gordon didn’t look pleased at the behavior of the crowd as the band left
the show. I hope they come back to South Florida again, but not with
Goldfinger.
And for all you morons who have to mosh, including all the members of
Goldfinger, stay at home. You ruin a good time for everyone else who
doesn’t want to act like an idiot.
Mike – Ft. Lauderdale
The Boca Raton Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My first Femmes show! Woohoo! Yeah, i went to the Boca show.
Man oh man, was I excited. Concerning Goldfinger: I don’t know they
might’ve been pretty good, or really bad I didn’t notice i didn’t see
them as anything more than an obstacle on a way to my joy. Audience?
little, spoiled Boca brats, there to defy their parents and flaunt new
piercings. Who cares? The femmes were all that mattered. i was so afraid
that the enormous excitement that had been building up in me for months
would be ruined by reality once again. But surprisingly enough, my
excitement was more than justified. What an incredible shock to the
system!
hmm I just realized that you probably are waiting for some details of
the show, and not my silly blobbering of a kid who got this awesome toy,
which happens to work even better than it was advertised.
Well, they played all the crowd pleasers (which I somewhat disapproved of,
but what the heck) I believe i was one of the few people in there who
knew songs other than those of the first album and New Times. I knew them
all. and that was also fun. they didn’t play Fat or Hollowed Ground, but
still…. I was thrilled to death.
well that’s enough.

before the show…funny.

I’m glad you think you have a smart comment for everything. Trying being
nice once in awhile..maybe someone might actually like you. And, if
there is no demand, then the CDs are not stocked. And, they are sold at
a higher price because fewer are being sold and they have to make a
profit off the CD somehow. That part is called the laws of supply and
demand..demand goes down..price goes up.
Plain English…RALLY FEMMES FANS!!!
Hehe…
Oh, and even though I love Goldfinger and they are playing this evening
(thursday) 20 minutes away, I am not happy abou them dissing the Femmes
with the 80’s night comment..that was indeed rude..i’ll give them credit
for that at least…sigh

-Pat. Says: Further economics discussions should be conducted outside
of this newsletter.

The St. Pete Show..Fake Fans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
saw the Nov. 9th show at Jannus Janding in St. Pete- pretty good. I
enjoyed it, my fiancee did not (though he’s not much of a fan :).
Personally, I thought their last St. Pete show (in ’94, i believe) was
better, but.. .i was sick for this last one, so.. whatever. They did
play a few songs that i didn’t recognize, but i was pretty drugged up
(antibiotics and all).
As for fake fans… well, my first Femmes tape was a copy that my entire
freshman class had of someone’s copy of a cd… It had “American Music”
on one side, and The Lemonheads’ “It’s a Shame About Ray”… Anyways, that
one finally bit it, so i had to buy one… Then the rest soon followed..
So now my collections complete, except for Hallowed Ground, which I can’t
find for the life of me. Anyways, I’m drifting. I wore my Femmes shirt
to work the Friday before this show, and got TONS of copmpliments, from
everyone- my managers, my co-workers… People that listen to everything,
all kinds of music. The Femmes are just one of those bands that almost
anyone can get into… Just because they don’t know any history or only
know “Blister in the Sun” doesn’t make them ignorant or fake… just
unfortunate :).
RE: VF Quote..Lake Buena Vista Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello, i must tell you that i do apologize about my mistake in my little
quote, i know that it is not Gordon, but i just got, well, excited shall
we say? Can you all please forgive me? i swear i will try my hardest to
never do it again.
On a different subject, i went to the Violent Femmes show at the House
of Blues, Lake Buena Vista, Fl. Oh my goodness gracious me. That was, by
Far the BEST show i have ever been to. It was my first VF show, but i
have seen quite a few shows in my time. i took 3 people as well as meeting
my sister there. One of the people i took has been obsessed with Perry
Farrel for numerous years and wasn’t too impressed with the Femmes, but
she liked them ok, the show impressed her so much she hasn’t stopped
listening to them since she got back. All those people i took with me
have basically fallen in love with them, and that’s good, by golly, it’s
about time. They now see why i’ve loved them for so long and oh my
goodness, Brian is so wonderful, he never ceases to amaze me, and Gordon’s
voice is like, like, something, beautiful. (is there another word). i
almost cried during “Good Feeling”.
i have never been so happy in my entire life. i only got kicked once on
the shoulder, the crowd wasn’t too violent. i think i’m babbeling, but
i just wanted to say, “Oh wow” . They played Add It Up very last, what
a smashingly good touch.
Oh yeah, i wanted to know if anyone knows if Brian Ritchie is
gay. He did a rather interesting intro to Dance Mother Fuckers Dance,
mentioning Bill Clinton’s speech about gays and how we have to accept
them and then said “My good friend Brian Ritchie is gay…” just
wondering. i love you all. sorry i’m taking so long.

-Pat. Says: I seriously doubt it. IMHO it would be best not to try to
discuss the intensely private aspects of the band members’
lives. They deserve that respect. Now, it IS open season on
those topics which they have themselves openly discussed;
religion, family and the like, and if one of the members were
openly homosexual, that’d be ok too. But we don’t have to
know absolutely everything about these guys. That’s just my
opinion. I won’t stop such a thread if it starts up, but I
don’t have to like it, and I won’t.

A Real True Fan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been on vacation so I missed the whole start up of this “true
fan” crap. I just want to thank a guy who is a true fan. I was going
to buy a “Rock!!!” CD for someone and they were going to send me a copy
of “The Mercy Seat”. Well, he ending up gettting a copy of “Rock!!!”
but still sent me the tape! That is a “true fan” all this stuff you
guys are getting into is very petty, as Greg Pepper said. We should
just be happy that we all have a good band to listen to.
Thanks alot Travis for the tape.
RE: Fake Fans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I agree totally with Greg Pepper.He said that it dosent matter how many
people like a band,or how much you know about a band,the only thing that
matters is that YOU like them. I started with Violent Femmes then got Add
It Up,since then Ive gotten Why Do Birds Sing?, and New Times,while I may
not have all there albums,or know every minor detail about the members,I
like them alot.And who cares if someone only has heard a couple of there
songs,they are not claiming to be the biggest Femmes fans in the world,
are they? Well Im sure as hell not!!!!And what Greg said about being glad
the local boys are known across the nation,I agree there to.I live in
Phoenix Arizona,and Im really glad the Refreshments are out there touring
and making it.It’s hard to find people that like the Violent Femmes,but
not as hard as it is to find someone that likes Sonic Youth or Pavement.
The point is,if the Femmes were not being played on the radio,everyone
except the people that live in Milwaukee would know them,so be thankful
they are kind of popular.

RE: Fake Fans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This whole thing about “fake fans” makes NO sense! Do you want the
Femmes all to yourself or something. That’s pretty selfish. Why do you
care if people like the same music as you? And who are you to say that
the Femmes are YOURS and anyone else that likes them is a “fake fan”?
That is the biggest load of BS that I’ve ever heard. Don’t be so
moronic. All I’ve read from this list is about “true” fans and how some
people have more of a right to listen to the Femmes than other people for
some foolish reason that they conjured up from who knows where. Get over
yourselves and stop being so stuck up.
Just had to get that out. Sorry if it sounded harsh, but it’s
really sickening that we can’t find anything better to do than bicker
about this crap. What about the music?
Finally, some words of sanity, from Greg!
And Juliana, you DO live in a strange community. Any small area that
could produce four of my exes HAS to have something in the water…. 🙂
I share the same scratchy copy of Debacle as Juliana, I believe [Jana–?],
the copy which has the sliced, diced, and generally improved copy of
Country Death Song.
Out of curiousity, does anyone else on the list know each other
personally? It was Jana and her crazy crowd that got me into the Femmes,
I’m wondering if y’all have similar experiences….
-Pat. Says: Rebecca is right. Enufs’enuf. On Monday I hope not to have
to copy any more fake fan letters. PLEASE PLEASE don’t make
me.
RE: Top Five Faves..Fake Fans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been reading this newsletter for a good two months now sitting
here reading what everyone has to say about everything….. about fake
fans…..their first song…. their concert experience but I figured it
was my turn to voice my opinion on everything….
Well the first Violent Femmes song I remember hearing had to be Out the
Window. See my brother who is now 8 years older then me listened to the
Femmes and I got to like them and I thought that song was funny back when
I was 7.
My favorite songs… by anyone in no order at all.
American Music- VF
Women and Men – They Might Be Giants
You’re pretty when I’m drunk- BloodHound Gang
My Ruca – Sublime
Come on Eileen- Dexy’s Midnight Runners
Iko Iko- The Dixie Cups
and there are many more

Bands:
Femmes of course
Sublime
Bloodhound Gang
36 Madison Avenue(My bro’s Accapella group)
and once again many more

On the issue of fake fans
No matter what band you are into there will always be people into them
just because of one song or that they are “cool”. I hate it but I
realize that one time or another in my life I have done and will do it
again….. and also its human nature to want to fit in to be cool.

Well that is it for now I will enjoy reading the next issues

RE: Opening Bands

Hey, Bobby V., we have gone to a lot of the same shows. I remember
Jimmy’s Chicken Shack opening for them (at the concert we were pissed at
them for playing too long so we now call them Jimmy’s Chicken Shit) @ a
New Years Show awhile back. Phil Cody opened for them at the spring show
in Georgetown.
Does anyone remember who opened for them last New Years? The HFStival
show was the best in my opinion-the hundreds of beach balls during their
set was awesome. I’ll see you at the New Years show!

ummmm….i have a friend who told me he once heard the femmes and jane’s
addiction together. my sister doesnt believe him. does anyone know if
he’s telling the truth, or just trying to make me jealous?

also so the femmes open for 311 in ’95 in Omaha. Where did you see it
the other way around?
