As far as the High as a Kite issue goes.. from the shows I’ve seen and
heard about from close friends I know I wouldn’t enjoy it. Alot of
crowds just get too violent around the Violent Femmes (ironic?) I think
its cause of so many really young fans. Although its getting better, I
still wouldn’t chance ruining a buzz standing underneath a crowd full of
flying crowd surfers.

I have a copy of it on tape, if anybody’s interested in trading for
other live femmes stuff.

Well I have seen the femmes in Large venues and very small venues
(smaller than a high school gym) I think small shows are better than any
arena type shows. They are more intimate and the band tends to talk more
and play longer. Plus if the place is small enough you can be right in
their face with no bouncers in between. If any one remembers the
Original 9:30 club in D.C. You know what I’m saying.

Get the Roomie

My roommate hates the violent femmes, everytime I turn them on he gets
up and switches the music, i never get to listen to them anymore.
Because of this i am asking all of the people on this list to send him
e-mail detailing exactly what is so cool about the femmes and what you
think abuot him for hating their music and never letting me listen to
them.
send e-mail to
thanks and hopefully i will be able to listen to them every once in a
while.

Finding the Hard Stuff
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been looking for vf stuff for several months, and although
ROCK !!! was the hardest to find, many other imports and bootlegs are
a lot better. “Film Noir” is excellent, but my favorite is “Kiss Off”.
I’m pretty sure that this was a Berlin ’84 concert, and it is great.
My advice to fans looking for rare discs like this is to check out local
cd resale shops. I found all of my stuff (including ROCK!!! for $12.99)
at little places like this. Kiss off and Film Noir were ordered for me
by the clerk there, and were fairly inexpensive. Talk to the people
that work at these buy-sell-trade places. Most of them are really into
their music and usually have suggestions for ‘underground’ mail order
places. They should be happy to help you out.
HOWEVER–I STILL HAVEN’T LOCATED A POSTER OF THE ORIGINAL FEMMES, SO IF
ANYONE HAS ANY TIPS FOR ME I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL.
thanks! –valerie
ps- although they have a shameful selection of Femmes stuff, try BURNING
AIRLINES for other obscure band merchandise. They’re on the net
somewhere, and their mail order catalog is HUGE.
Are the Femmes a cross-country tradition anywhere else? I first heard
them from my best friend when I was a freshman in high school (Henderson,
Nevada, 1987). He got a copy of the first album from some team-mates on
the cross country team.
Later that year, when I was on the track & field team, it was the only
thing everyone could agree to listen to on the bus going to meets.
I also played football during those years and I don’t believe anyone
else on the football team gave a rat’s ass about the ‘Femmes. 🙂 They
were more of a metal vs. rap crowd. (hey, it was the late ’80s!)
And since I am writing my first note in a long time, I’ll contribute
some of my favorite bands/musicians: the Femmes, Ani DiFranco, Matthew
Sweet, Morphine, The Mudsharks, Patsy Cline, Randy Travis, Spiritualized,
Indigo Girls … and of course, like everyone here (it seems), I have
my jazz and classical favorites, too.
One other note, on ROCK!!!!, the more I listen to it, the more I love
it. Every Femmes album has that effect on me. I think that’s why they’ve
been with me for so long. I cannot _wait_ to hear the new stuff. PLEASE
ANYONE, if you have some of the new stuff on tape, I would love to have
a copy. (Or if there is a bootleg out there that includes the new stuff,
please point it out.)
I may not have to wait that long to hear it though, it seems like the
Femmes have played here every December for the past three or four years,
so I’m praying they’ll come again!
Thanks for listening, all, and nice to meet you. Back to lurk mode …
Has anyone ever considered that the first two verses of this song could
be interpreted as Gordon talking to a girl in the first verse, and she
responds in the second? I’d never really thought about it before.
Ignore the third verse and try it out. Imagine it as a duet.
subject: FAT
I was wondering about the bootleg first of all. I just read it in the
last post. is there anyway I can get a copy of it somehow. If anybody
has any bootlegs I would be interested. I was wondering now that someone
brought up “FAT” if the VF have ever done that in concert. I have been
to 6 shows and they never have as far as I remember. The closest thing
to it was in 94 at Hammerjacks in baltimore maryland, some guy starting
singing fat and i joined in and then so did a lot of other people.
that was really great. When are they coming back to DC or baltimore or
anywhere close anyway. anybody know if they’re doing the new years eve
concert again in dc. if so, who’s going with me.
I went to the TMBG concert too in dc since I couldn’t go to the esu show
and I was so dissapointed. they sang primarily all their new stuff and
left out so many great songs off of flood. the thing that sucked the
most was the crowd though. nobody was into it. I was going nuts and
everybody looked at me like I was a big freak. well, not everybody but
this one prick who I was ready to seriously injure. just my $.02
-Pat. Says: I the last time I remember them playing Fat was at the
Kirby Center, Wilkes Barre, PA in 1993. It’d be nice to hear
it again; my kids get a great kick out of it.
