Date Conflict
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you can see in the concert section, there is a conflict of dates.
Two shows are listed on the same date by two different sources. I wonder
if one or two of you kind souls in FL would check this out for me. I have
the address and phone# of the Chili Pepper: 200 West Broward Blvd
Ft. Lauderdale
(954)525-0094
and Jannus Landing: 16 Second St. North
St. Petersburg
(813)896-1244
I am thinking that maybe they are playing both places, but on different
dates, and someone made a typo. That of course would be the nicest
explanation for all you eagerly impatient Florida subscribers.
Forum Gig Info
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right, here’s the latest on the London gig. The Forum is indeed what
was the T&C; the ‘phone number is 0171 2841001. Tickets are 13 UKP
in advance.

Cheers,

Xav

The Lisle Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought there would be someone writing about Lisle, i guess not. I
though it was a really good show. there was moshing, but not a lot,
and not TOO violent. I can’t remember what all they played. I do
remember that the intro to Dance Mother Fucker Brian told a story about
the Bears and the Packers, (Illinois and Wisconsin) it was really
cool. Their last song they played was Add it Up —what a suprise. It
was really good I thought. I know more of you were there-you should
write about it
The ESU Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, let me say that the ESU show this past Friday may have been the
best show I’ve ever seen. I know, I know; I always say that, but this
time I really mean it. The Lisle show must have been truly good, because
the guys were all in a terrific mood, especially Guy, who played with
true abandon and joy. The show started with the band walking down one
of the aisles, all wearing goofy costumes and playing small instruments.
I haven’t seen them do that since The Kirby Center in Wilkes Barre in
1993. There were some problems with Gordon’s guitar and Brian’s bass,
but it didn’t seem to faze them in the least. They played some songs I
haven’t heard them do in a while, some I’ve never heard, and of course
the standards. The venue was small; only 900 tickets were available, and
there were seats, but none of them were in use. The house was standing
and having a great time. The crowd was terrific; none of those problems
we’ve heard about at other venues. One thing that happened there that
I’ve never seen is that at the entrance, security made the guys and gals
stand in two separate lines, and each and every male and female was
frisked; men by male security and women by female security. It was very
tight. But that separation thing did cause some confusion, because the
female line was much longer, and the guys had to wait a long time for
their friends. It was weird. Made me feel like I was at schul, which is
where I suppose I should have been on a Friday evening, Yom Kippur to
boot. OK, without further ado, here’s the set list:

Didgeriblues (I wish people would stop asking Brian if they could play
his ‘doo. It ain’t gonna happen.)
Out the Window
I’m Nothing
Waiting for the Bus
Country Death Song
BITS
American Music
36-24-36
I Wanna See You Again (Finally! more ROCK songs!)
Dahmer is Dead
Breakin’ Hearts (Glad to hear them play this more)
Good Feeling
Dance Motherfucker Dance
Bad
Color Me Once (Never heard them do this live before, ‘cept on the
Machine Single)
Old Mother Reagan
Rejoice (Yup, that’s the new one. It’s good. Classic.)
Never Tell (I always love it when they do this one; it’s one of my
personal favorites)
Black Girls (Yes, they always do it, but it is my absolute favorite,
great time to jam, like a snowflake or a fingerprint
never the same twice)
Gone Daddy Gone
Kiss Off
Mirror Mirror
Add it Up

OK I guess the show was long, I never keep track of time because I get
lost in it. It’s all relative anyway. An hour seems like a minute. To
those of you I met: it was great to meet you, sorry I seemed in
a rush, but I was. To all I missed: maybe next time.

never play it?

RE: Call For Topics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just a little response to Paul () I agree though i
will be quitting aol and possibly online altogether so i won’t complain
that much. AM is … well I’m tired. Oh and don’t even think of calling
phish the dude of life two different bands. If you want people to know
just say Dude of life (1/2 Phish) Or something not Phish (dude of life)
Whatever like it matters.
RE: Call For Topics
i’m with that paul guy, he’s like..right this newsletter (no offense
meant to anyone) is getting REALLY dull. novel thought START A FIGHT
ABOUT SOMETHING REALLY COOL!!! then like every will write in, and all
will be happy and jolly, and um..good.
okay must go to work now. bye.
-beky
-Pat. Says: Alright, I mean no offense either, but let me get this
straight. Conversations about solo efforts, videos, how to
get to shows, set lists, the influence of Gordon’s
Christianity in his lyrics, and the other various topics
aren’t good enough for you? You know, if I were to meet all
of you at a party somewhere, those are exactly the things
I’d like to talk about, and I’m sure many people must agree
with me, as exhibited by the volume of mail I get every day.
I find most of these topics very informative and interesting.
I LIKE to hear what music others listen to, what a recent
show was like, what you think and believe. I for one don’t
go to a party looking for a fight; I go for stimulating
conversation. I go to meet new and interesting people I might
not otherwise have had the chance to meet. I don’t like
confrontation and ‘bad vibes’, as my parents might have said.
I think starting an argument just for the sake of having an
argument is sort of pointless. Now if any of you want to
do this, go right ahead; I won’t stop you unless you resort
to nasty personal attacks upon each other. I’m sure you all
know by now that if you have a problem with a specific
subscriber to email that person directly; don’t broadcast
your hatred to the entire group. Other than that I can’t
really control the content of this letter. I am in the end
just another subscriber like you. I just wanted you to know
that Mama Wary will observe it all with disapproving eyes
and breathe a sigh of relief when the storm blows over.
RE: Videos
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
People were talking a few days ago about videos of the Femmes the
ones which I know of that no one seemed to mention(please don’t bitch
at me if someone did) are Machine and Breaking Up the only one I’ve
ever actually seen was Machine and that was on a public access show
where the guy plays mostly eighties glam metal.

RE: Musical Tastes..Fans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just thought that I would add my two cents. First of all, I’m 16 and
live in southern Missouri. I bought my first VF cd because I needed to
order another for a cd club and I had heard Blister in the sun and liked
it. I own three VF cds and but I’ve never seen them in concert. I
totally agree with that guy from St.Louis they should come to Missouri.
But I understand why they don’t, I live in a small town and was happy
when I found one other VF fan. I feel kind of unworthy though because
I’ve never heard the song B.I.T.S. my loss I suppose. I don’t know much
about music, but I know what I like.
Alright, I understand that everyone has their own opinions about who’s a
“true fan” and who should and shouldn’t be at concerts, but diversity is
a part of life, if all the fans were exactly the same what would be the
point? Although some fans are more devoted than others we all enjoy the
same thing lets celebrate the similarity(and the differences). If this
got on anybody’s touchy side I apologize ahead of time.
Wow, I’m going to go see 3rd Eye Blind on November 9 or 10 or something.
Maybe I could hook up with some Femmes fans. Maybe the band will be
Femmes fans. Maybe they’ll play Black Girls or something. God, that
would be cool…
Well I always knew it was an import, but I bought it at Tower Records in
Boston along with the cd single for Tonight. They had plenty of copies,
I guess it just had weird distribution.
-Pat. Says: All of you who have not yet bought ROCK! should go to the
Official Homepage and order it there. It might take a bit
of time, but it’s cheap. And I suggest you write to
Interscope Records and ask them what the fuck their problem
is. Well, be nice. Send the petition Cheryl made up; it’s
in the last two issues.
Well, i know you can get broth ROCK and DEBACLE from CDNOW.COM but
they’re really expensive. You can get ROCK! from the vfemmes.com for
$12 and I think I saw Debacle at the Exclusive Co. near Milwaukee for
$12… I didn’t buy it tho cuz I already have all the songs from their
other CDs.
Those big magazines usually review only major releases, and ROCK was a
little-known Austrailian release, so I bet those magazines have never
even heard of it.
Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano Works On Tribute Record
Mercury Records is putting together a tribute album to Gordon Gano
and his work as lead singer of the Violent Femmes. Mary Lou Lord, Lou
Reed, PJ Harvey, and John Cale are said to be on the album, according to
one of these act’s managers. However, the project is in its early stages
and no one at Mercury could confirm or deny the reports. The album, which
is being put together by Gano himself, is slated for release sometime in
1998.
Imagine Lou Reed doing the Country Death Song!!!!
Classify the VF?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i think it’s impossible to classify the femmes. lord knows i’ve tried.
whenever mention them to my friends, the first thing they ask is, “what
kind of music are they?” “uhhh… well, they’re kinda rock… but then
they have this country thing… but not, you know, COUNTRY country… and
they might be alternative….” point being: they kick ass, so they don’t
need a grouping. also, in the spirit of drawing out the wallflowers:
juliana sweety, SAY SOMETHING. 🙂
