Subject: World Without Mercy

Greetings,

I recently picked up Blind Leading the Naked on CD and was very surprised
to find that there seems to be a track missing off it. I had the
cassette version about 5 years ago and I clearly remember a track that
was called (maybe) World Without Mercy. The reason that this song stuck
out in my mind so much was because it was so different from any other the
Femmes have ever done. I don’t even think that Gano did the vocals on it
but I could be wrong.

It might have the title of the track wrong. The one lyric that stands
out in my mind from it though is:
Love is a viscious angel
Flutering wings, Trapped inside your mind.

And the chorus was something like:
In a world without mercy
you can call me, I can call you.

Hope this helps in identifying it. The melody is absolutely haunting and
gets stuck in my head frequently considering I haven’t heard it in about
5 years.

Does anyone out there know why my CD does not include this track? Who
did the vocals on it? The story behind it?

I’m so excited!!!!!! The femmes are playing my school, SUNY Geneseo, on
the 29th of September. I have never seen them in concert before, but I
KNOW they are going to rock!!!! Also, they are playing with They Might
Be Giants, my second favorite group in the world!:) I can’t wait!!!!

To the person wondering about why ROCK!!!!! was not released in America.
What I heard…all rumors of course…was that Epic dropped them after some
artistic differences involving video making…(translation…Femmes were
thinking artistically, and Epic was not) something like the Femmes
circumventing Epics normal channels to get a video made and doing it on
their own….of course this could be totally fraudulent…but I’m fairly
sure that the Femmes don’t have a domestic label currently…or at least
didn’t when Rock!!!!! was released.

Why on earth would you say no one in St Louis likes them?
I love them, and just about everyone I know shares my feelings. In fact, I
would have a hard time thinking of anyone who DOESN”T like them.
When they do come here, the tickets are sold out before I even hear about it
. . .

ROCK!!!! was released here in Australia about a year and a half ago, and I
eagerlly went out and purchased it hoping it would be another album of the
usual high quality expected from the femmes, but I was very dissapointed with
it. After the brilliant “New Times”,”ROCK!!!!!!” sounded like a few badly
written songs thrown together over a period of about a week.
The Violent Femmes also did a concert tour shortly after the album was
released and this, unike the album, was absoutley fantastic. I was lucky enough
to see them twice whie they were here and they thankfully stuck mostly to
playing songs of previous albums, rather than “ROCK!!!”. To anyone hasn’t seen
them live, it’s a must. There is nothing that can compare to a live rendition
of “Never Tell” – arguabuly the greatest song they’ve ever written.

Also does anyone know if Brian Ritchie’s, or Victor Delorenzo’s solo albums
ever made it out to Australia? We never heard a thing about them.

I suppose a name change from “ROCK!!!!” to “Hallowed Ground” is out of the
question???

to all of you out there, i think you should buy the album ROCK!!!!! it is
just amazing. Not as good as ADD IT UP but that was a retrospective, paid
$18 for it and I think it is worth every cent!

I know the the Culture Club, fronted by the infamous ‘Boy George’, did
“Children of the Revolution” back in the early ’80’s, but I’m not
sure if they were the origional performers of it. A woman named Mare
Bolan wrote the song.

ok, well for anyone who really cares, i mentioned before that i am
collecting all the femmes albums–and I just bought a new one–so now my
collection is as follows (purchased in the order in which they appear):

1. Add it Up
2. New Times
3. Why do Birds Sing
4. Violent Femmes
5. Hallowed Ground
6. Rock!!!
and most recently,
7. 3

**plus i have The Crow Sdtrk–which as we all know has Color Me Once on
it!!

**also I have the Saturday Morning Cartoons album featuring the femmes
doing Eep-opp-ork-ah-ah. (i have this on video tape too–like the actual
cartoon video featuring the one and only violent femmes!!)

**oh yeah and i have the woodstock 94 cd–that has Dance Motherfucker
Dance and Kiss off on it.

so there it is my collection. I am quite proud of it too.

I thought I’d just let you know that “Rock” was released in Australia
cause of tour they were doing here. It had been three years since
they’d last been here and two years (or thereabouts) since the release
of their last album – so they decided to do a record for the trip.
Basically, they were trying to improve the numbers for their shows.

After reading ROCK!!!! for many months now in search of a concert date that
I can make it to, I was finally rewarded by a local radio station commercial
for a local festival where the Femmes will be playing. So thirty minutes
and thirty-eight dollars later, I now finally hold two tickets to see the
best band I’ve heard. Yes!!! Finally!! I’m not sure whether it has been
announced or not(my mail has piled up so I haven’t read the last few
ROCK!!!!’s) but the Violent Femmes are going to be right here in little old
Columbus Ohio on September 20!! See whoever there,
