Milwaukee & Chicago Review

Hey all!!!!

I was at the show at the zoo last night! I met some great folks!!! It is sooo great to see the FEMMES are still rockin’ the stage and that the fans are still following faithfully and growing growing growing!!! It was a great show, I finally have all their autographs on one CD! We talked to Gordon before the show and suggested FREAK MAGNET! He said he would see what he could do…I dunno if it was us or what but THEY PLAYED IT! I tried hard to get them to play “I hear the Rain” but maybe Sunday in CHICAGO!!! Yes I will be there! Hope to see some of the same familiar faces! I will where my tie dye again! Another comment about the show…GORDON seemed to have a lot of energy and of course VICTOR was as crazy as usual! And BRIAN was AMAZING!!! I love that man!!! PEACE OUT TO THE KENOSHA-IANS I MET UP WITH AT THE CONCERT!

JEN! 🙂

CHICAGO WAS GREAT!!!!!! I talked to Brian before the show and asked him to play I HEAR THE RAIN!!! THEY DID!!!! They also played REJOYCE AND BE HAPPY!!!!! YEAH FOR FREAK MAGNET! And mostly yea to Victor for playing it. It seems like things between the three of them are evening out…i mean their stage presence is more leveled out. When Vic first came back he seems to want all the attention…now they all ask for it evenly! NOT THAT THEY HAVE TO ASK!!! especially Brian!!! Does anyone know where I can send fan mail to or Brian?????????

RE:Dialogue with Delorenzo

How disappointing the answers given by Victor were. I guess I’ve seen my last VF concert. I won’t bother to go to their close-by Seattle concert. They are no longer a living vibrant force. They are a nostalgia band pure and simple. I always looked forward to new songs. And, with the entire body of great songs from the Guy Hoffman days destined with a couple of exceptions, never to be performed on stage, the concerts are going to be simply put boring. They should tour with the old R&B groups from the 50s and 60s, who as old men, are trying to eke out livings by going back to their youth.

I wish that the boys had disbanded rather that becoming a reunion band. It gets stale and is a huge disappointment. If a new drummer had joined, the repetoire would be greater.

Guy learned the old tunes originally done with Victor and did just fine. I don’t understand why Victor won’t learn the songs recorded with Guy at the drums. The fans did. Is it pride? A fear of not being able to play to Guy’s level of brilliance? Laziness? All of the above?

It’s really a shame that Gordon will write no more. Maybe the band should do a cover of “No More Songs”, the last song penned by the great Phil Ochs before he hung himself. I hope I don’t wake up some morning and learn that Gordon has gone out to the barn and hung himself in shame.

Thanks victor for clearing things up. I was so busy celebrating your return that I missed the part about having to settle for less. Please UNSUBSCRIBE me from here to eternity…

Detroit Review

I’ve been listening to the VF’s for over 20 years now. Got married in ’89, had to put down the bong and records. 999, Ian Drury, Generation X, The Ramones. Listening to them in the privacy of my office or vehicle. Well Guess what?, Wife took my Dodge and came home and said. Honey,(that’s what she calls me), I wouldn’t mind seeing the Violent Femmes in concert. I pissed myself, wiped and hugged her. After 15 years of marriage, we went to Roostertails in Detroit. Dam, we’ve been to front row at Aerosmith concerts, Tom Petty, and whatever else wives drag to spouses to. My wife admitted that was the best concert she ever went to, spilled beer and all. The violent femmes fans are the greatest, not some “I got all their records, I am better than u” bullshit stuff. It was a true love and peace show for all the ages. Now I am taking the wife and children, hell they need education too, to Chicago for the concert in the park. Now, for the question. Original Violent Femmes material on record? I am tired of the critics, assholes that they are, (they are still being listened to) proclaiming “the 40 year-olds already said what they had to say.
Music on.

RE:Dialogue with Delorenzo

Ok, first and foremost I would like to make it clear that this is only an opinion so I don’t want to see a bunch of people whining in the next issue, with that said I would like to get something off my chest that’s been bothering me for quite some time. In the early 90’s after Victor left the band I was upset being that “Why Do Birds Sing” had been my all
time favorite of all the femmes albums up to this point, not only that I was surprised to see “Guy Hoffman” was the replacement after “New Times” was released. Now I’ve been to many Femmes concert’s in the pass though
unfortunately I missed the WDBS Tour so the femmes kicking out the 80’s tunes to the crowd was just as satisfying as I had ever expected, the first concert I saw with Guy I wasn’t anymore impressed but I noticed that the experience had changed and was very much more diverse than before with evidence of hits from all era’s, I admit seeing well… seeing the femmes years ago live was defiantly cool but as for one of the best bands I have ever seen? Yeah right, the show goes like this
Gordon gets on stage usually not even giving a hello and starts the playing after 3 songs they make a joke continue playing all the while Brian is so into his instrument while Victor is dancing around the stage like an attention craving idiot and Gordon is stiff as a board, alas is the encore then they come out with 1 or 2 songs and end the show with Kiss Off the entire time playing to themselves only interacting with the crowd on the last verse of Blister in The Sun, now I have perfect reason
to believe this is the way the show always goes being that I have numerous bootleg tapes and videos that verify my exact words, If anyone out there has seen a “They Might Be Giants” show you will know they put VF’s live performance to shame but never the less I like the band so I have always managed to get tickets when they come to town, but after seeing the last 2 shows I really am disappointed with the group, When the femmes were here 2002 Victor had just rejoined the group so I
figured it natural to play songs primarily from the self titled being that the album was just re-released on slash and rhino as well I figured it was going to take a bit to get the swing of things after being gone for nearly 10 years but after the last concert I attended I was utterly disgusted that they played the exact fucking set and all the while Victor danced around like a fucking idiot trying to get all attention centered on himself, I think that was the last set of tickets I will
ever purchase but I must conclude my opinion by mentioning that fact that is the Femmes are going to continue touring with Victor they should at least play some of the newer stuff, many of us are more than sick of only hearing the early 80’s recordings when there are 10 other full lengths they could be playing from and as far as I’m concerned re-releasing your first album 20 years later is just a sign of your career being capped.

the idea that there is no real vf music from that time is so fucking
arrogant and insulting to me as a fan… oh…i guess i missed out on
the real vf music since i like lots tracks off new times, think rock is
the best and freak magnet has some gems too…or maybe i am not a real
fan… what about my lost time victor? i bought those albums… those
songs are my friends and my memories as much as anything prior… dude,
worry less about playing parts and more about playing music… that
vessel bullshit don’t work on only half the contents…

You have got to be kidding me??? ” I think of all the songs as one song but I don’t think the songs from the time when I was not in the band are songs at all???” Does anyone else think that reeks of more than a little hypocrisy??? American drummers are fu.. fu.. full of it …

Baltimore Review

——————————————————————————–

Just a quick note: the femmes recently played a Baltimore arts festival called Artscape, and for those of you who are complaining about the all-too-similar set list all too often–There is hope! The femmes played more than just their songs from the self-titled and greatest hits albums. They even broke into “Freak Magnet” at one point. There was also a new song written by some comedian guy (who was brought on to sing) called “George Bush Lies.” All in all it was a great hour and half show and it gave me hope for a non-washed-up future! Viva la Femmes!
