Saratoga Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Saratoga Show on 08/15 was pretty good, only because it takes the
Femmes to pull off a low volume rock-n-roll show. Evidently you can’t
play at higher than 90db at Villa Montalvo, Gordon explained as he
started the one song encore, it wreaks havoc the growth cycle of the
grapes. 90db in an open air theater isn’t very loud.
“The Horns of dilemma” headed by iggy pops old saxaphonist joined in
for some of the songs. Even a roadie got into the act (to cover brians
bass) while Brian played xylaphone. Brians Suess hat was COOL. Being
slightly less than 1.5 hours the show seemed a little short and was
over before 10:00 pm. I didn’t know a couple of songs in they played
early (we’re meeting people) but it seemed they covered most of the
mainstream stuff.
Just before he got into the mainstream stuff Gordon made a point to find
out why nobody was dancing, he actually asked if the theater had a rule
against it, turned out they did and you could only dance in the wings.
Then he played Blister and the crowd finally got to their feet. Up to
that point it looked like everyone was watching the nutcracker.
I don’t think I heard Freak Magnet and was a little disappointed, I
could go on forever about what they didn’t play. I know they can’t
play everything but I did expect to hear Freak Magnet, everyone else
got to hear it (or so the song lists said), I can’t find the CD
anywhere.
DAMN.
I enjoyed the saratoga show (even if my review doesn’t show it) I’m
just very glad they recently added A Fillmore Show.
PS:femmes added a petaluma show on 9/7.
-Pat. Says: I checked their homepage (http://www.ramapo.com), and it
doesn’t have a fall calendar up yet. I’ll try to email somebody
there. If they respond, you’ll hear about it here.
New Releases
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all,

I wrote to CookingVinyl to know more about the possible new release
(I’m sure i’m not the only one). In their answer, they looked very
confident about it:

“we’ll be releasing a ‘Live Best Of’ album in November, the exact date
is not decided yet. And there’ll be a new studio album called ‘Freak
Magnet’ which will be released early next year, most probably in
February.”

I hope everything will be like that… That would be really great.

-Pat. Says: CookingVinyl is a British Company, and Beyond Records an
American. It looks as if these releases will finally be
for worldwide distribution.

Mercy Seat on Ebay
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If anybody’s interested, there’s another copy of the Mercy Seat vinyl
onsale on Ebay. OH, and I can’t believe nobody responded to Lirker’s
question, but the answer is that he was in a band called the Mercy Seat
in the early 80’s, while the Femmes were on hiatus. It disbanded when
Gordon left the band. One album was released, on Slash records, and
there was apparently another in the works, but it was never released.
The Mercy Seat was a gospel band, Gordon wrote music and was a backup
vocalist.
