Myrtle Beach Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Count me in! It’s only an hour’s drive from home and it’s a Friday
night. Here are some more details if you’d like to post them. House of
Blues lists it as an all-ages show and the cost is $15. There are also
reserved seats in the balcony (still a great view) for $25. Tickets go
on sale July 31. Box office phone (not Ticketmonster) is 803.272.3000
and they open at 10:00AM EST.
Newport Folk Fest
For the very disgruntled Aaron who also got stiffed on the Indianapolis
Newport Folk Fest like the rest of us, it has just been moved, not
cancelled. It’s been moved to the Polaris Ampitheatre in Columbus, OH.
What’s a three hour drive amongst friends?
See you in the Buckeye state.
well, thanks for not screaming at me and I do appreciate your
suggestion, but I went through that. I thought I did like it for a
while but I realized I was just trying to like it because of who it is.
I still listen to it every now and then, but all I’m saying is that it
doesnt compare to their past albums. The new songs are good, but they
could be better with different production, and a little better
arrangement on the album. Compare ‘black girl’s to ‘a story’, different
songs in a lot of ways, but they could have used all of that wild
instrumentation from ‘black girls’ on ‘ a story’. Thats my whole point.
Buy the album, but not for 31 bucks.
-Oellablue
-Pat. Says: Sound advice, M. It is pointless to spend $31 for an album
which WILL be released in a few months, and for which you
shall soon be able to spend about $15. I’d only spend $31
for a rare out of print, a multi-album, or an import not
available anywhere else for less, and then only for a select
few bands.
Dylan Cover and other songs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everyone- this is my first post on this list. I heard Rob say that
he liked the dylan cover on Freak Magnet, well I was wondering what song
did The Femmes cover of Dylan. I was also wondering what other songs
were on the album.

thanks a lot

-Pat. Says: Positively 4th Street. The track list for FM was listed in
AM awhile back, but it bears repeating:
I’m Bad
Freak Magnet
All I Want
Rejoice and Be Happy
I Wanna See You Again
I’m Nothing
Positively 4th Street
A Story
Happiness Is
Forbidden
Mosh Pit
Yes Oh Yes
When You Died
Requiem
Reckless Stones

The Lightning Screwed Me Up!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok everybody! I am alive and I do intend on writing stuff (a lot of
stuff actually!) in for the list but it’s just not working out! The
latest in a string of delays was the loss of electric we had just a few
minutes ago after I was halfway into my story of the Milwaukee show
(which is already a month late, I know, I know!). I thought the storm
was a good thing because I can’t ride right now so I actually had some
free time but apparently I was wrong because all of a sudden the
computer screen went PFFFFTTTTT! and then all was blackness!
AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel better now.
Everybody come to the West Virginia show!!!!!!!!!
I will write more soon! I promise! (REALLY!!!) But I’ve got a riding
lesson to teach in half an hour on Bingo the Wonder Horse so I gotta
run.
Gordon’s Musical Trials..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I recently read this review of the VF that I had never read, and it
brought up a question that I had (but forgot) a lot time ago. Does
anyone have a script (or, one could always pray, a taping) of Gordon’s
musicals?

john

PS — Here’s the excerpt from the article, which can be found, along
with several others of the VF at http://www.musicblvd.com

“…Perhaps the Rex Harrison reference should not seem surprising. After
all, while other pop-music celebrities spend their down-time directing
music videos, acting in movies, writing books, or publishing poetry,
Gano eschews such typical contemporary career ambitions, preferring to
compose old-fashioned musicals. His most recent effort, Carmen: The
First Two Chapters, was begun after he idly glanced over Prosper
Merimee’s nineteenth-century short story “Carmen,” he tells me.

“What excited me was that every musical version I’ve seen, like Bizet’s
opera, always starts with Chapter Three. No one to my knowledge ever
dealt with the first two chapters of the original story. And I found
them to be extremely entertaining. So I wrote this musical.”

The musical was recently presented for a short run at New York’s
Knitting Factory. Gano accompanied the songs on acoustic guitar and also
played the role of guide/commentator. Cast with a small group of singers,
the piece was summed up by one critic as “a stage revue of the kind rich
college boys in the early part of the century might have put on.”

Carmen is Gano’s third musical (it was preceded by Oresteia with a
Happy Ending and Desire Caught by the Tail), but the first for which
he’d written both music and text. “I had this problem with Carmen, in
that I had written all these songs, and yet there was still the need for
quite a lot of connecting dialogue. I kind of balked at that, never
having done it before. I thought, maybe I can get someone else to do
this. Who do I know who’s a writer? So I called up Oscar Hijuelos
(author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love). His answering machine
had opera music on it, which I took as a great sign. I left a message
for him, but I never heard back. Later I was able to thank him, saying,
‘since I never heard from you I had to do it myself, and thank you,
thank you, because it really helped push me and I was able to come
through in a way that was satisfying for me and was another stretch
artistically.'”

“I told some friends of mine about it. They said, ‘So, you need help and
you call a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist to ask if he wants to bail
you out with your little project.'” Gano laughs ruefully. “I guess that
was pretty cheeky.”

-Pat. Says: This article was written by Thomas E. Adelman, and appeared
in Puncture, Summer 1994 #30.

Smoke On the Water….Blister in the Sun…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, I got this from a review of Deep Purple’s new album in last week’s
L.A. Weekly:
“…but I’m still waiting for them to cover “Blister in the Sun” by the
Violent Femmes, which I never realized stole “Smoke on the Water”‘s
chords until my 6-year-old son played the latter on the piano a few
months ago.”
What do you think?
Nick
mypen15
-Pat. Says: Imagine that. Two rock songs which use the same chords.
Wonder how many times THAT happens. OK, this reviewer is
an idiot. Who is he/she?
