Yippee! The Summerfest femmes show is tommorow! Hope to see everybody there.
There might be a few old messages accidently in the digest today. My stupid mail program screwed up and put all my deleted messages back in my inbox. Remember, you *can* use more descriptive subjects to make the Table of Contents more interesting. -James

Im from the east coast (south jersey) and the Femmes are pretty big. The
other day on Beavis and Butthead (i never watch this but nothing else was on)
they showed a Voilent Femmes video for Nightmares. It seemed pretty cool. Has
anyone else ever seen this? And to whoever asked, I like Bad Religion, too.

clap, clap, clap. What you just said is how i feel exactly, except for the part about young fans only liking the first and add it up. I am 13, and i have 5 femmes Cds (Violent Femmes, 3, Why Do Birds Sing, Add it Up, and Rock!!!!!) and intend to get the rest (New Times, Hallowed Ground, The Blind Leading the Naked) and the new CD that they’re working on even as we speak the day it comes out. (they signed to interscope records).

I run a DJ service and everybody reacts when i play “Blister in the sun” and dance and everything, annoyig as it is, but of course when I play a better song, like “Out The Window” of “Life Is an Anvendure” NOBODY EVEN know what I’m playing. That’s stupid because blister in the sun is one of their worst songs. Gordon even said himself that he wishes more people knew that there was more to the femmes than “Blister In The Sun” (WLUM Interview on the radio, Jan. 18 1996, i taped it, If anybody wants a copy. I’ll trade for a VF concert)

THE WORLD MUST KNOW THERE IS MORE THAN BLISTER IN THE SUN!!!!!

thank you,

Couple of things…first of all, now that the East Coast West Coast thing
has happened I’d like to officially claim my place as Violent Femmes Fan on
the West Coast. California. It’s like a different country out here.

Also, on meeting Gordno, Brian, and Guy . . . I met them too…in fact I
met Victor too. Okay, I’m done trying to be impressive.

A funny story that Brian told me once: I was mentioning to him that I had
seen them 15 times which wasn’t at all impressive to him, and so I followed
it up with “But I guess you’ve been to a lot more Femmes concerts than me.”
He then said that once he was sitting in a restaurant and they put the
Femmes on their music system (not knowing that he was there, or who he
was…) He asked the waitress to put on some other music. The waitress
asked him “What’s the matter, don’t you like the Violent Femmes?” and
Brian responded “Yes, I like them just fine. In fact, I’ve been to every
one of their concerts.”

too funny.

this Mailing list for about 6 mo. or so buy I’ve really never said
anything(by the way this is in response to the question about
West(east)coast Femmes fans) I went to see the Femmes at La Luna in
downtown Portland for their New Times Tour, it kicked ass. Buh bye;)

I’d be willing to be that everyone on this list has at least 4 or 5 (or all)
Femmes cd’s. But the reason for this post is a simple question:

Besides Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, how many songs have the Femmes
recorded covers of? And what covers have they/do they perform in concert?

just curious.

I hear the rain…

Okay….I’ll admit that my first exposure to The Violent Femmes was about two years ago when they made a surprise performance at Woodstock. And, my frist Femmes Album was Add It Up. But I have since been exposed to past and present greats of the Femmes, and I do not believe I am a lamer anymore. My favorite song is either “American Music” or “Kiss Off” they both rock….the live version of “Kiss Off” from Add it Up is just plain swell.

So Anyway, I currently only own Add It Up, as there aren’t too many great places to buy music here in Parkersburg, West Virginia, so what would all of you subscribers suggest be the next albums I purchase? And do you know anywhere that actually has these albums?

Thanks

Subject: the sad tale of a young femmes fan

I remember when I discovered the femmes for the first
time–it was when the played blister in the sun at woodstock
94. I saw it on Mtv, I was at my grammas house! Since then
I have become a huge fan! All my friends like the Femmes
too now, thanks to me! More than anything I want to see
them live, but I live in a really small PA town, so its not
going to happen, or so I thought. Then one day I found out
they were playing at the Y100 shindig. I was so happy,
becasue where they’d be playing was only about 2 hours away
from me, and it was on a friday, which meant my parents
would have no reason to say no! So I asked them if I could
go, and if one of them would drive me, casue we have almost
NO public transportation and I have yet to get my license.
The show started at like 4:30, and both of my parents are
teachers, so that was a bit of a problem, but I was willing
to suffer through a day of school for the Femmes. But then
they said NO! Neither of them would drive me!!! SO I went on
a quest for my own ride. At 3:30 on the day of the show I
was still in Brodheadsville, PA begging for a ride. I never
did get to see them, and its all my parents fault, they
think I have fogiven them and gotten over it, but I havent.
I never will. I mean I missed the perfect oppertunity to
see the Femmes, and its all my parents fault. Well, thats
my sad tale. If anybody EVER hears anything about the Femmes
coming back to the eastern Pennsylvania area, let me know.

Jen

About three or four issues ago I wrote about The Violent Femmes and their
relation to punk rock. Since then I have recieved about ten letters regarding
that subject.
In case any haven’t read it I wrote an article on the
similar forms of punk and the violent femmes, I also asked if there were any
others who would call them punk, and if they were questioned by friends about
liking hard core punk and the Femmes.
Now i am asking people to write me if they enjoy listening to both the
Femmes and punk rock.
