Burn up the clouds, block out the sun.
My hope is in one they can’t bring down.
My soul is in hallowed ground.

Chicago Show

I too, went to the Chicago show. I didn’t write before, because words
just cannot describe how incredible that night was for me. I chatted
with Sigmund, and Gordon…Gordon signed my jacket. Also, Brian tossed
me his guitar pick…I felt like such a giddy teenager (I’m pushing 30.
Their performance was amazing…kept my adrenaline pumping the whole
time. The crowd wasn’t your normal Femmes crowd though…there were
some definitely true fans, but many I think were there for the whole
street fair thing and decided to check them out…some little kids
were in the crowd too. Anyhow it was just phenomenal!!!!

On The Road With Deana

Hi Pat and my extended Femmes family!
I am coming to you live from the Hwy 12 Internet Cafe in beautiful
Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. I have been dying – yes dying – to
write since last night and when the tired eyes saw this place
the car made a four lane change (without signal!) to pull in
here! So did anyone feel a particularly weird tingling last night?
An unexplained vibration or just a strange feeling that you couldn’t
shake? Starting about 10:45pm? At about that time at Linneman’s
Riverwest Inn Brian Ritchie and Victor Delorenzo played on the
same stage – TOGETHER!! I could hardly believe my eyes – much
less my ears! I found myself thinking of that Obi Wan line from
Star Wars, I just felt a powerful shift in the force -as if a
million voices just cried out.” I know you were all there in
spirit.
This most unexpected and impromptu performance came about as
an addition to Sigmund Snopek III’s regular gig. Vic and Brian
accompanied Sig on some tunes from his album Wisconsinsane, some
jazz standards and – the two highlights for me – Mack the Knife
and an extended version of Summertime. Sig tried to start Blister
twice but Brian and Victor were having none of it. Frankly, I
was glad. It was so much more interesting to watch them all play
new things and – best – to watch them play off of each other
and improvise. Sigmund worked his magic on the keyboards and
so many other instruments I can’t even remember them all. Victor’s
son Malachi sat in on guitar for most of the second set and Sigmund’s
brother Shaun played a few lovely acoustic tunes in between sets.
So much wonderful music and so many gifted musicians – just an
absolutely unforgettable experience. I’m on my way to Minneapolis
now so Pat add me to the who’s going where for 1st Avenue (yay!)
and of course Summer… Summer… Summerfest!!!!!!!
Peace, Love, and Violent Femmes …

Femmes On TV

I’m 23 and still love cartoons. And because of that fact I am really
excited to tell you about this. I was watching cartoons on Nickelodean
yesterday when I heard something out of the ordinary. When I heard the
music I thought at first “nah, it can’t be them”, but as they started
singing I went nuts! The Femmes were singing a commercial spot for
“Spongebob Squarepants”. Has anyone else seen this at all, it’s great!
It’s cool to see them doing something like this. I love the Violent
Femmes and I also love cartoons so it’s a perfect match. Way to go
guys.

CD Find etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went down to Athens Georgia yes because I’m a huge R.E.M. fan. Anyway
I was at this coffee shop that had some used CD’s and tapes, looking
through all the CD’s most were really lame artists but figured they
were all $5 so kept looking and was so shocked to see a promo copy of
Freak Magnet with the plain white cover. I’ve seen this CD on Ebay for
a lot more than $5, so it just goes to show what you can find used. I
never thought I’d ever get a copy of this so to everyone out there
search the used CD stores because you just might find a copy. I also
found a copy of Brian Ritchie’s solo album Sonic Temple &Court of
Babylon at a Border’s Outlet for like $6. I’m 28yrs old and have been a
fan of the VF for over 10yrs and have seen them live 5 times. It
disappoints me to know that their music doesn’t get played anymore.
Face it the state of music today is quite sad, with all this teen crap
out there. These acts are selling out stadiums very pathetic. Hopefully
decent music will come back sometime soon. Most of the bands I listen
too people are like I didn’t know they were even still around. Finally
saw the car commercial with It’s Gonna Rain, it didn’t bother me at all.
Nostalgia Etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple quick notes:

To Matt…I must agree that when I had first seen the Femmes in Duluth,
MN, I thought it would be a nostalgia show. Boy was I wrong…It was
definitely here-and-now.

Put my vote in for “Sleepwalkin'” Definately a radio worthy song with
just enough pop to influence even the most hardcore top 40 fan. (Bonus
“Someone sucked me..” will draw people just as quick as that other
song by some band that went something like “Why can’t I get just one
fuck”)

And lastly…Is the original recording if Freak Magnet an exact copy
of the released version? If not I would like to get any songs that are
different. (straight download, FTP, whatever…I’m not proud.)

Thanks Pat and keep up the good work. We’ll give you as many sick days
as you need without a cut in pay.

RE: Vote

I like “Every Breath You Take” because it is “new”.

“It’s Gonna Rain” is an interesting choice because it is “new” again
because of the commercial which I have yet to see. If you all remember,
Volkswagen made “Da, Da, Da” by Trio popular some 15 years after its
inception.

I’d like something from Freak Magnet to get played such as Rejoice…,
but lets tackle one battle at a time.
