Dialogue with Delorenzo

——————————————————————————–

Don’t forget – Victor Delorenzo is still taking questions from us so send yours in today (if you haven’t already). As soon as the Femmes take a break from the road Vic will trade in the brushes for the keyboard – temporarily!

Television

——————————————————————————–

A friend of mine just introduced me to the band Television which I suppose those of you from an older generation may have heard of. The music itself was not similar to that of the Femmes, but the lead singer’s voice on some tracks sounded REMARKABLY like Gordon. Has anyone else noticed this? Could this be one of our favorite guy’s influences, or just a coincidence?

SPIN Magazine – July Issue

——————————————————————————–

Hi,
Check out the July 2004 Spin Magazine with Beastie Boys on the cover. Page 42 is a list of “The Records That Changed MY Life ” Liz Phair. #3 is Violent Femmes ,Violent Femmes (Slash. 1983)

” I was a Replacements freak, but the Violent Femmes made more important art. They had an almost drunken sensibility but you knew they were dead serious about music. They were just a trio. but they were alluding to a much bigger sound with only a few elements.”

I just felt proud of them.

Gordon on Tribute Album

——————————————————————————–

Gordan Gano will contribute a song to the Daniel Johnston tribute/fundraiser album “The Late, Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Uncovered”, coming out Sept. 21st. Johnston is a lo fi folk singer who has been a great influence
on alt and indie rock bands for a long time now, but because of mental illness and lack of sales outside of college radio circles, his financial situation is bad. Hence the tribute album, featuring people like beck, Death Cab for Cutie, the Flaming Lips, Clem Snide, Bright Eyes, Guster, Sparklehorse, Tom Waits, and Gordon Gano. All of the songs are covers
of Daniel Johnston originals; Godon is doing a song called “Impossible Love.”

Portland Review

——————————————————————————–

In the words of Morrissey…. Sad, Sad, Sad ….

ok… They played “Color me Once” …. that was good….

The rest was, of course, a VF fan’s worst nightmare…. practically every
song from the first album, a few from Hallowed Ground, a few from WDBS and
nothing that wasn’t on Add it Up…

It was a Festival show….so, I didn’t expect much more…but, one can
always hope… There was part of a Ray Charles song done.

But, g*d I wish they wouldn’t play to the crowd’s expectations
anymore….. This reminds me of when Ani DiFranco did that solo tour
about 2 years ago…. it costed a bit more than the average big show…
but she took the time to play things you didn’t hear often.

I would personally love to see the Femmes do a major city tour where they
play for the long time fans in small venues…. I know they don’t practice
much, but they would probably have to practice a little for such a show…
especially Victor to catch up on the songs that he missed or figure out
his own version. Basically, I would pay $40.00 to see such a show. I’ll
pay $50.00 to see Lou Reed… so that says a lot…. Anyone else with me
here. I have been to 20+ Femmes shows over the years… maybe 30…. and
it gets tiresome when there isn’t a new album…..

Femmes, if you can hear me……. help us out

love=solidarity,

BFD Review

——————————————————————————–

Excerpt from the Contra Costa Times article “Veteran Acts Rule BFD” dated 6/14/04:
http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/8918447.htm?1c

…But the annual radio show thrown by KITS-FM (Live 105) is always a summer highlight. These folks throw a lot of effort into their party, this year producing the awesome return of the Beastie Boys, an out-of-nowhere performance from the Violent Femmes, the red-hot Yeah Yeah Yeahs and New Found Glory, and the jackhammer punk stylings of Bad Religion, among others … What’s nice about Live 105 is, not only does it pull in the just-out-of-school kids with younger bands like New Found Glory, it also pays respect by booking an older alt-band that needs exposure. In turn, that band — this year it was the Violent Femmes — puts on a whopper of a set. There’s few things better than being surprised by a band suddenly better than one remembers. Seeing the trio — considered for years to be mostly a Wisconsin cult band with a couple hits — bring an amphitheater to its feet with “Blister in the Sun,” “Gone Daddy Gone” and “American Music” was nearly surreal. They’re great songs, but they all seem so unorthodox as to be popular by accident (any band that uses xylophone and plays a lead on a seashell is priceless). Best of all, the fun they had on stage spread to the crowd, most of which was up dancing.

Loooeyville Review

——————————————————————————–

Sitting at the airport waiting for the hotel shuttle to pick me up I saw a sign welcoming me to Louisville, Kentucky. It said “Welcome to Louaville, Lulvul, Lu-is-vil, Loooeyville.” No matter how you pronounce it, this city is full of Femmes fans and several thousand (between 7 and 15 depending on who you talk to) showed up for Friday night’s 4th Street Live show. It was a helluva night under a giant glass canopy, with VF sounds bouncing off the canopy and surrounding high-rise buildings like some kind of musical laser-tag game. The crowd was enthusiastic and the guys rewarded us with a nice set that included I Hear the Rain, Waiting for the Bus, Make More Money and FAT! along with some fine HOD sax playing from a local jazz musican. Thanks to my friends (old and new) for a wonderful evening!
