Compilation Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Folks, we are still looking for distribution volunteers. We have about
four for West Coast, a couple for East Coast (part-timers), a couple
for western Canada, one European (England)…and that’s it! Please.
We need a few more volunteers! We want this to go smoothly, without
being too much work for the distributers!
Freedom Fest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi
This is in regards to “Freedom Fest ’99” in DC in which our beloved
Femmes will be appearing. I’m so excited!! I just found a web site
(after searching and searching, and giving up), I went to WHFS site
finally to e-mail a request for Kiss-Off, and in the comments section
of my request I asked about the Freedom Fest. Then, immediatly after
I pressed send and returned to the homepage I noticed a box in the
corner of the screen which said “Freedom Fest ’99!” I couldn’t believe
it. But sure enough it is the same event and it looks unbelievable.
20 bands, 10 bucks with canned food, outside on the 4 blocks
surrounding the MCI Center. That means it’s perfect for taking the
metro there. The event runs from 11AM to 9:30PM (fireworks time).
Cost of admission includes 4 stages with a total of 20 bands. I think
this might be my best 4th of July ever. What better way to celebrate
the independence of this country? 🙂 okay here’s the web site for
those who want to check it out for themselves:

The Femmes With Cake
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
L’il Boek said: <>
Well, get the shotgun, Pa, Sandy’s gone plum loco!! There’s only one
thing I like better than some Femmes, and that’s some CAKE! I can’t
believe my two favorite bands in the world are going to play together.
And general admission, too, for maximum danceability. In over 100
rock shows over the past… well, never mind… I do believe this is
unprecedented. Actually, I can believe it; I’ve been wondering if
these two bands know and/or like each other. Even though their music
is quite different, I’ve noticed some odd similarities between them.
Specifically:
* definitely rock music, but with lots of acoustic instrumentation
* both feature a trumpet, highly unusual in rock n’ roll
* both bands are outspokenly political
* both feature songwriters who often use irony to blunt the raw
emotional force of their lyrics
* both cite diverse musical influences, particularly country
* both are loud and proud about being from rather unfashionable
cities (Milwaukee, WI and Sacramento, CA)
* both are incredibly hard-working and just tour their butts off
* both seem to be dissed by the press quite frequently (for reasons
which I can’t fathom)
* both feature lead singers who started out playing acoustic guitar
and singing in cafes
* both have designed their own album covers
* both think that the volume at which most rock bands perform these
days is idiotic and make a point of turning it down
* both do sincere, not kitschy, covers of pop anthems (“Do You Really
Want to Hurt Me”, “I Will Survive”)
I’ll bet you anything Vince Di Fiore will come out and play with the
Horns of Dilemma. ohohoh, I need to put my head between my knees now.
Looks like I’ll need to rack up another 1200 Frequent Femmes Miles to
head up to Portland in September. Pat, put me DOWN for that puppy!!
Portland – Cake/Femmes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>SIDE NOTE: CAKE will be opening for the femmes on September 5th… I
>doubt there will be any other bands…

I tend to think that this is a Cake show with the Femmes opening. Cake
is riding a giant wave of popularity and can now play bigger venues
than the Femmes (at this time). However, they need an opener like the
Femmes to play an amphitheatre. Then again…I could be completely
wrong since I am in Los Angeles and not Portland.

Either way though…this is NOT a show to miss. I have seen Cake twice
and they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. I would COME
if they played in L.A. with the Femmes.

WHOA!!! Stop the presses!!!! The Femmes are playing in Pomona?!?
Dude, that’s like less than an hour away!!! Add me to the list Pat!!
Kick ass!!!
Awesome!!! So what are shows at County Fairs like? Are they usually
general admission? How much do they typically cost? etc.?!?!?

Hitting the Ground
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just got my monthly primestar viewing guide, and it says that this
movie will be on the Sundance channel July 6 at 5:30 AM and July 30
at 4 AM. That’s Eastern US time. For those who subscribed since we last
discussed this movie, and who don’t yet know about it, Gordon wrote
the soundtrack for this,and a lot of cool people contributed musically.
Wish the soundtrack CD would finally come out!
Carmaig De Forest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone,
I went up to the Knitting Factory in NY Monday night to see
Carmaig De Forest. He is kind of a quirky Lou Reed performance artist
who opened for the Femmes in Elizabethtown. His show was so good. He
plays guitar, ukelele and piano and sings these catchy little tunes
about life in his old hometown, Loved ones dying and some good old
fashioned Punk rock (Kiss me seven times).
He has a really warm, comfortable style and I would definitely
recommend seeing him perform if you get a chance.

-Pat. Says: Ah yes. Etown. The first time in years I was so mad at a
bunch of college boys I wanted to beat them all up.
Separately or en masse; didn’t matter to me. Why? Because
of their idiotic behavior during Carmaig’s performance.
