Pat. Says: OK, now, I am well aware that from time to time, someone
subscribes to this list, only to find that it is not what they had
expected. Everyone can’t be pleased all the time, and so I make
sure that all unsubscribe requests are handled immediately. In
almost a year, there have been very few instances when I did not
immediately unsub; and ALL BUT ONE of them were because the
unsubbers did not send me the email addy they had used to sub. If
I can’t find an addy, I can’t unsub it. That said, I would like
you all to please read the following post and explain to my why
some people feel the need to do this (and of course I did not
deign to edit in any way):

<>

This came to me out of the blue yesterday. It was his FIRST unsub
request. But the sad thing is that his was not the worst unsub
request I have ever received. Really. I can’t understand attitude
like that. I mean, all of you did subscribe of your own free will,
right? Nobody forced you, and I didn’t just pick your addy out of
the blue and stick it on my list.
So I’ve asked before, and I’ll ask again: If you find that this
letter is not to your liking, would it kill you to unsub nicely?
OH, BTW, let me remind you all that I do have young children who can
read, and sometimes do read over my shoulder as I put this letter
together. I’m trying to shield them from the knowledge, for as long
as I can, that there are some total assholes in this world, and they
don’t need to be exposed to these testosterone-laden buffoons who
find their every human interaction must be one of conflict. So if
not for me, do it for them.
OK. Sorry. I just had to vent.

Yes, it’s a Tom Waits tribute CD, and even if you don’t like TW,
you may like this CD. TW purists haven’t been impressed by it, but
I love it, and I think “Step Right Up” is even better than Waits’
own version (not that I’m biased or anything . . .). Gordon Gano’s
voice is just *perfect* for it, and it’s the perfect vehicle for
his voice, and he manages the carney-adman-barker style of the words
fabulously. I cannot imagine any other musician who could have done it.

Regarding Step Right Up:

I was actually listening to that again today, so it’s funny this came
up..
Step Right Up is a tribute to Tom Waits (who, by the way, I completely
recommend … from his early 70’s stuff to his latest … and it’s
varied… VERY VARIED…)… Regardless, the real STEP RIGHT UP song
(by TW) is slow and raspy. the VF’s cover of it is kinda faster and …
dare i say it… more fun. Regardless, there are some other good covers
on this cd as well. It’s this cd that got me into TW’s stuff. I’d really
recommend it.

Which leads me to another topic. . . I seem to remember Gordon saying
somewhere (maybe it’s in his webpage bio) that TW was an important
influence. Tracking Tom’s stuff from the early 70’s to now, it almost
seems like Tom’s later stuff has been influenced by some of the VF’s
work… Maybe they’ve kind of influenced each other in backwards
ways…? Any thoughts?

Tape Finds..RE: Step Right Up
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hello everyone!
I have a couple things to mention! First off, the greatest musical
find for myself in a year! Last week, I was leaving campus when I
noticed they were selling used CDs and tapes. Well, I made my way over
there and first noticed my 2nd favorite band (They Might Be Giants) in
the concert tapes section. I decided to look some more! Well, guess
what I found?? Yes, that’s right folks…a Violent Femmes concert tape.
It dates back to around ’84 or ’85 and it is at the Lyceum Ballroom.
Being the unlucky soul that I am, I have yet to have “Film Noir”. BUT,
i checked out the setlist for that CD and well…it pretty much matches
my tape, minus a few songs.
Here’s the setlist for my tape:
1. It’s Gonna Rain 2. Prove My Love 3. Promise
4. Country Death Song 5. I Hear the Rain 6. I Came For Your Women
7. some accapella jesus song 8. Confessions 9. Faith
10. Gimme the Car 11. Ugly 12. Jesus Walking on the Water
13. I Held Her In My Arms 14. Black Girls 15. Add It Up
—encores 1. strange almost instrumental song (listed as cabaret on
film noir) 2. Blister In The Sun 3. Kiss Off!!
afterwards, there is also another Irish song sung! They also sang Happy
Birthday to Victor and Sigmund!
The tape is spectacular…They Might Be Giants is just as good too!!
Also, regarding something about “Step Right Up”…I have that CD! it’s
okay…there are a few highlights on the CD and (i hate to say this) the
Violent Femmes aren’t really one of them. I thought the song was dumb
and it’s at times hard to listen to.
That’s all I have…have a good day everyone!!
Ryan 🙂
RE: Soundtracks
Regarding the question about Violent Femmes songs appearing on
soundtracks:
“Good Feeling” appeared in the movie and on the soundtrack of “I Was a
Teenage Zombie” (1987).
Reading the little blurb on soundtracks I remembered this cd that I got
a couple of years ago. It is called Saturday Morning Cartoon’s Greatest
Hits. It is a Cd of all the popular bands today that made a remix of
cartoon theme songs. The Femmes [lay on song called, “EEP OPP AH-AH
(Means I Love You)”. It is a cute song and a very cute cd.
>This site also has a track listing for that Les Enfants du Rock ‘N Roll
>boot we discussed some months back….. maybe it does exist….
>Violent Femmes Album Title Les Enfants Du Rock ‘n’ Roll
>Date of Release 1985 (approx.)
>Type bootleg Time 47:00
>1985 LP Slat VF1-1985
>1.Blister in the Sun 2.Hallowed Ground 3.Prove My Love
>4.No More Reagan 5.Daydream Believer 6.F.A.I.T.H.
>7.Ain’t Gonna Wait 8.Gone Daddy Gone 9.Jesus Walking on the Water
>10.Batman 11.Never Tell 12.Good Feeling
>Okay- 4 could be Old Mother Reagan but what about 5, 7 and 10?!?!!!
Okay, check it out, the unofficial page says that they covered the
Monkees “Daydream Believer” in concert once (at least). “Ain’t Gonna
Wait” and the “Batman” theme song are both on the show from 1/20/85 in
Berkeley, CA.
If anyone has this Les Enfantes Du thingie, I’d really like to hear it.
E-mail me privately. I’ll make it worth your while, baby…
Les Enfants et Le Batman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not too long ago I received a bootleg from a fellow VF fan ( he can
identify himself if he wants, anoniminity is precious ). On it, as
filler, was the theme for the TV series Batman done by, who else, the
Violent Femmes! My guess would be that this is a track on the infamous
Les Enfants Du Rock & Roll. The tune is dated 1/20/85 which fits
perfectly with the “album”, leading me to believe that the album is no
joke. Incidently, Batman is worth listening to, its precious!

Step Right Up – 15-song tribute album to Waits, dominated by alternative
rockers…the Violent Femmes’ smirking walk through “Step Right Up,”…
You can follow the “related artists” link from the AMG link
http://205.186.189.2/cg/AMG.exe and get a detailed description of this
album – Also I think the info they have here for GG’s and BR’s solo
stuff is the most complete I’ve seen.

<>

To follow up on my own post :o) … John (DidacticCP) brought to my
attention that this *could* be the 2CD release of WDBS – I checked the
release dates and he’s probably right. In all likelihood this is NOT
another boot just another listing.

Pat Says:
<>

Uhhhh…. ahem… the lack of it actually! :o)

<>

Ain’t it great! You’ll almost always hear Blister or Kiss Off near the
end of the 2nd period or middle of the 3rd during broadcasts from the
“Joe”. I’m happy to hear Penguin’s fans have great taste in music too!
Oh yeah – WINGS RULE!!!

Wasn’t there some band called Pajama something or other that had a song
called 36-24-36??

Hmm… can’t remember ever hearing about it but wouldn’t that be sweet?
