Well this is only the second issue of ROCK! that i’ve recieved and i already
love you all!!! My name’s Tony. I’m 14 and I’m in love with the Femmes and
anything asscociated with them.I first heard Violent Femmes play Blister in
the Sun at Woodstock ’94 and have been singing the song ever since. I’d
never heard of them before and never really gave them much thought until
this Easter i was at my grandma’s house and found some of my uncle’s tapes
lying around. One of them happen to be Add It Up and i saw it had Blister in
the Sun on it… I listened to it and only it for about the next 2 weeks.
I’ve been hooked ever since. Some ppl will ask me who i’m listening to
sometimes at school and when i tell them they say…”who the hell’s that??”
I’m from a very small Midwestern town (my town has population of
500…consolidated school) and no one around here i know has ever even heard
of them. But now i’ve managed to find some new Femmes fans. My friend (and
bandmate) likes them but not as much as me i don’t think. Another friend
loved Blister in the Sun and asked me to record it for him. So i did and the
next week his sister came home from college and he was amazed when she said
she like the Violent Femmes too. I guess Femmes can bring a family together.
And now my mom even likes the Femmes. I mentioned one of my bandmates
earlier…I’m trying to start a band…hopefully to play Violent Femmes and
other things. Anyway…I play bass and think Brian Richie is a bass God. IF
ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY FEMMES BASS TAB IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
please ppl…if u have the tab…email me. Also if there are anymore young
Femmes fans on the list email me too.

To the new member of ROCK!!!!! that wants to know if there’s anyone on
the east coast that likes the Femmes,

HELL YEAH !!! I’m from new jersey (close to nyc) and I’m proud to say
that the Violent Femmes are my absolute favorite band. (I happen to be
listening to Gone Daddy Gone right this very minute) A while ago I got
turned on to them by a friend, and I told 2 friends and they told 2
friends… and pretty soon I found a whole lotta other femmes fans lurking
all over the place. (Most of the better NYC radio stations here play the
femmes regularly because of all the requests that they get) Also the last
really big concert they played was on the east coast (In Phillidelphia) ;we
had someone from ROCK!!!! that went and they said that even though they
played with a bunch of other bands, they made the whole show. I admit that
I have had some trouble finding a concert close by but can’t tell you how
much I’d love to see them live, and the next time they play near new york you
can bet that I’ll be first in line for tickets!

Also in response to your ? about Dance, Motherfucker Dance,
I couldn’t tell ya what the phenomenon is . It’s just …. crazy.
To me it sybolizes everything about being young and letting go and, just
once in a while, taking the time out to go absolutly fucking crazy! (I
firmly believe that if you don’t do that every once in a while – you really
will go nuts.)

The first, and so far only time I have seen the Femmes was about
a year ago, here in Tucson. It was one of the best concerts I
have been to, as the venue was a 1200 seat theatre with no
reserved seating, so I showed up early and got in the second row.
They had an opening act, Possum Dixon, which personaly I thought
sucked. So did most of the rest of the crowd.
The concert was fantastic! I was close enough to see the color of
Gordons eyes. The only problem was that I didn’t know the lyrics
to any of the songs they played. Now before you die of shock and
ask “how could you possibly not know Blister in the Sun?” know
this that I had not even heard the song before the concert.
My love fopr the Femmes was origanaly based only on The Blind
Leading the Naked, a tape which I had played countless times
and knew all the lyrics by heart. Then of course to spite
me personaly they didn’t play any songs from that album.
Still the concert was magnificent, and it inspired me to go out
and buy all of their albums. Now I am just waiting for them
to come to Arizona again.
Just out of curiosity, are there any other fans out there whose
first introduction to them was *not* their first album?
Let me know,

Chris

Hello. First of all I know a lot of people don’t like DanceMotherFuckerDance, but I really love that song. It has So much power in it. I agree that it is very moronic, but that’s one reason I love it.

Also, for some strange reason I want to make a list of every Femmes song every played on that radio. Right now I’ll post the list of the ones i’ve heard on the radio here in Milwaukee, and anybody that has any additions post it to the list.

Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Kiss Off (live), Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, Ugly, Country Death Song, American Music, Out the Window, Tonight, Dahmer Is Dead, I Danced, Nightmares, Children Of The Revolution,

that is all I can think of now. If anybody has any additions post it to the list

I live on the East Coast and I love the femmes and I know several other
people that do too. And I think that dance mother fucker is the most moronic
song, and I feel sorry for anyone who likes it.

Have any of you all heard about or attended these “Singer/songwriter”
shows? Currently, it’s Gordon, Jill Sobule (yuck), Mark Eitzel from
American Music Club, and Graham Parker. I know here in D.C. they’re
playing the Birchmere the 13th, and in New York they’re going to be at the
Bottom Line the 15th. Does anyone have any other dates for this? Has
anyone seen it? Does anyone want to give me a ride to the show?

I also think the Violent Femmes are a punk band. Punk, (to me) isn’t just
about playing really fast and hard, it’s a hole feeling that the music has.
Plus, the Violent Femmes have songs that bring up political issues, political
issues are another huge part of punk.
Any body on this mailing list like Bad Religion or The Dead Milkmen?

Hi Everyone,

I remember there were some attempts to get a date and time for everyone
to meet on irc but it never really happened – maybe because people
don’t check email daily or it was inconvenient or whatever.

Anyway, what I am proposing is making a #violentfemmes, with a bot, that
any user on this list can request op privileges for. That way the
channel will always be there for anyone to drop in, and we can all be a
big old real-time family 🙂

Before I do the groundwork I’d like to know what people think, so could I
have some feedback on whether people would visit it and how they think we
could make it work well?

Ta

Leah

In response to the question of “Dance Mother Fucker, Dance” being moronic – I
haven’t heard the Femmes explanation of it but personally I’ve always loved
it! I think it was probably a response to all the STUPID people who go to
live shows and just stand there like a ROCK (pun intended!) I have never
understood why these people would pay money for something they obviously
don’t enjoy – I mean when I listen to the Femmes I can’t help but dance!
Unfortunately Knoxville TN suffers from this head-bopping only syndrome and
since the Femmes didn’t play dance when they were here last year I guess I’ll
never know if anyone can cure this disease! Just my opinion;-)!
