I was thrilled to see that The Violent Femmes were scheduled to play in
my neck of the woods, sort of, (Lexington Kentucky) until I realized that
Washington and Lee University is in Lexington VIRGINIA! You might want
to fix that, lest someone else gets as happy as I was for about thirty
seconds. I have never had the pleasure of seeing the Femmes in person and
hope to someday soon.

-Pat. Says: Sorry KY subscribers. That’s what it said on the Official
Homepage. It’s an understandable mistake, since the KY city
is more familiar to those of us not from that area. The
tourdate has been corrected.

correct addy.

Coach House Shows!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello everyone. After hearing the stories about the San Diego show I
have no regrets about not going…the mosh pit getting out of hand,
things being thrown onstage, leading to the instruments being removed
and then the band having to be escorted offstage. Brian said at the San
Juan Capistrano show that there was a riot in SD and that they were
happy to play for a more sophisticated crowd that night. He said we were
more sophisticated because we were so OLD, and it WAS probably the
oldest audience I have ever seen at a Femmes show. So I guess because of
that, they played mostly all old tunes, but they did play BAD and a few
songs from ROCK & New Times. Gordon did a little rendition of “Rocky
Mountain High” to give the Denver fans equal representation in a little
Packers pep rally. He also sang happy birthday to one of their fill-in
guitarists, who got on stage to do a little “dead cockroach” dance. The
first show was more sedate-no one got up from their dinner/cocktail
tables to dance until near the end of the show. The 2nd show was much
more alive, with some action through the entire show-NO moshing, just
blissful play, and Gordon even walked off the stage onto one of the
tables and played. It was actually nice to see people respecting the
band and each other for a change. It was small-only seats 480-a great
place to see the Femmes if you get a chance next time they are there.
The only incident was at the end of, I think it was “I Wanna See You
Again”, some guy got up on the stage and ripped down a Packers banner
they had hanging behind them and walked off with it. Gordon stopped
playing and asked if someone would go after the guy who had just taken
off with their shit-by the time some cops had caught up with him, he had
already handed it off to someone. Gordon was upset because musically, it
was a special moment, which it was. All in all it was an awesome night
of some great musicianship-I even gained a little more appreciation for
Guy as a drummer, although I still miss the powerful energy of Victor in
the mix. Anyway, that’s my official review-now go, my friends, and see
the Femmes!
I don’t know too much about the Wayne Show. I’m pretty sure that it
will be open to the public. Shows that they’ve had there in the past
have been. I do know that I have my tickets lined up from my sister’s
boyfriend who goes to school there. The next time I talk to him, I’ll
see if he knows anymore. My suggestion would be to call the student
activities office at the school.
RE: Opening Bands
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I saw the Femmes for the first time in 1995, and I have been following
them ever since. As it is that Opening Bands seem to be a hot topic as
of late, I thought that I might comment. The first time I saw VF they
had a local band, by the name of 16 Horsepower, Gordon even plays in one
of there songs. When I heard 16 Horsepower I wondered, why didn’t I hear
of them before, and why doesn’t anyone else know of them? If anyone
knows of there where abouts, or what they are doing now please tell me.
I also saw the Femmes at the KTCL Big Adventure, an all day venue
including bands like: Reel Big Fish, Cracker, and Coolio (quite a varied
mix I might add ). The Femmes were the last to play, and by far the most
celebrated act of the day. I hope to see the VF in Denver soon, or I
might just have to drive to Wayne, Nebraska (where ever the hell that
is).

Kyle

-Pat. Says: It seems to me I read something about 16HP in a recent
issue of Alternative Press. When I have the time, I’ll look
through my back issues and send along to you what I have.
Wayne is in the Northeastern Tier of NE, about 30 miles
from the Iowa border, about an hour and a half NNW of
Omaha. I’ve really improved my Geography skills as a result
of taking over this newsletter!

Who Was That Band?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was at the VF concert in Ohio, at the Wittenberg fieldhouse. It was a
pretty awesome concert. Lots of moshing and all the great songs, but i
was wondering if anyone knew who opened up for them. They were not all
that great, but one of my friends asked me and I would like to try to
answer them. Thanks! Emily 🙂
