As you may have noticed, there was no issue on Friday. The reason was
that there were only TWO submissions, both from Mike Merryman, and I
didn’t think it worth an issue just for those two. I can’t believe with
over 850 subscribers only one person submitted anything! Semester break
is no excuse; we had plenty of people writing in during the summer.

VF Influences Revisited

I know this subject was wrapped up a while ago, but I just discovered
something new. The song Confessions from Violent Femmes sounds
surprisingly like Ballad of a Thin Man from Highway 61 Revisited,
Bob Dylan. If you have the Dylan album listen to the song then listen
to Confessions. The words are entirely different, but the music is the
same. Well, one is distinctly Dylan’s style and one is distinctly VF’s
but it is the same…..I don’t know enough about music to say what is the
same about them, just listen. It’s even worth to get the Dylan cd from
the library just to listen if you don’t have it.

Worldwide Appeal

The Femmes are truly loved worldwide….when I went to Israel over
Thanksgiving break, I stayed in the Shalom Jerusalem Hotel. Nearby,
there was a housing district, and some of the walls had graffiti in
English. Pink Floyd…Soundgarden…KoRn…Nirvana…Violent Femmes!!!
That made me so happy! Also, once in high school I was watching Channel
1, the mandatory TV news show, and they had an interview in (I think)
Bosnia. When asked what kind of music these war-stricken teenagers were
listening too, they said “Violent Femmes!” I wonder…has anyone else
had these kinds of experiences while abroad?

VF on Piano

Sometime this summer, someone wrote in asking about piano scores for
VF songs. No one responded. I’d like to revive that question. Does anyone
know about this? I’d like to get back to my piano playing, and starting
with VF songs would be great.
